Description

Present-day Indian River County was one part of the Spanish colony of East Florida. When Florida became a territory of the United States in 1822, this area was originally designated as a part of St. Johns County. The area became part of Mosquito County in 1824 and then it became part of newly-formed St. Lucia County in 1844. St. Lucia County was renamed Brevard County in 1855. In 1905, the area became part of the newly-formed St. Lucie County. Indian River County was created in 1925 from the north portion of St. Lucie County. The count was named in honor of the Indian River Lagoon.
