Owners of the building say they have taken steps to secure the building but said it is up to the parents of the children to keep them off the property. "It's just one of those things that little kids like to play around," said Judy Riggs, a neighbor who lives behind the ice house. "Someone's going to get hurt sooner or later,” she said. "When I hang clothes in the back yard, I sometimes see 10 or 12 boys playing around there." Riggs said she told Sanford police about the hazard, but nothing was done. Walter E. Schuette, a Fern Park businessman who owns the building, said it is presently being leased to Thomas Ice Co. Wilson Dezell, a spokesman for Thomas Ice Co., said he has tried turning the ice machines around so children won't climb inside them and has tried locking the door, but the building is still accessible to determined children. "Everybody goes there to catch tadpoles," said Joseph Webb, who used to play inside the building. Webb said children often sneak inside the building to grab chunks of ice. Albert Payne, a Sanford building inspector, who recently inspected the building, said he sees no danger to children playing in the old building. Payne said children were not supposed to be on the property because they were trespassing, and that it was the parents' responsibility to keep their children away from the building. Public Utility Enterprise Supplying the City and Local Residents Electricity, Gas, Water and Ice Three institutions that enter directly into the smooth workings of almost every business house as well as a majority of the homes of Sanford, are the Sanford Light and Fuel Co., Sanford Ice and Water Co., and the Crystal Ice Co., the parent company of which is The Southern Utilities Company, who maintain headquarters at Jackson-ville and plant throughout the State. The history or these enterprises take us back more than a quarter century. The Sanford Light and Fuel Co. was organized about 26 years ago; the Sanford Ice and Water Co., which was originally organized as the Sanford Water Works Co., was established in 1887[?] and the Crystal Ice Co., came into being about 8 years ago, In 1911[?] the Southern Utilities Co., assumed control of all three, although they are still conducted under the same name as they had been prior to that time. Under the present ownership many desirable improvements have been made, both in physical equipment and service. Big improvements have recently been made in the water works system, new electrical equipments have been added to electric light and power plant and about four months ago they installed one of the very latest types of steam engines, with a four hundred horse power. Electric Plant The electric light and power plant is situated out on First street about one and a half miles from the business section. The plant is perfectly modern in construction and equipment and has five generating units with an aggregate capacity of about 50 kw. The system of the company covers every part of the city. Gas Plant The Gas Plant is located near the water works. It has a capacity of about 100,000 cubit feet every 24 hours. Owing to the reasonable price at which gas service is furnished, it is used extensively for cooking and other purposes. Ice Department The company owns two Ice Plants, although only one is in operation—the Crystal Ice Factory. This plant is located near the electric light plant. It has a capacity of seventy-five tons daily and one of the main sources of revenue in this department of the company’s business is that of icing and re-icing cars of citrus fruit and vegetables. The plant is situated on a private track from the A. C. L. Ry., which has sufficient length to accomodate several cars at one time. Ice is delivered to local residents and shipped to the adjoining towns and villages. The product of the company is a pure artificial ice as it is possible to produce, their service is unexcelled anywhere and prices are such that any families can afford ice, summer or winter. Water Works The source of Sanford's water supply is a system of deep wells. The supply is unlimited and it has been shown by analysis that it is pure, wholesome and healthful. They maintain a reservoir with a capacity of 120,000 gallons also a 80,000 gallon tank which is mounted on a steel tower. The ice plant was built in 1926 by the Mountain Ice Company of Chicago, had a 700 ton storage capacity, operated 24 hours a day, ranked second in the U.S. for ice production, and was once Seminole County's largest building for somet time. During the late-1800s, individual ice factories were comprised of a machine room, boiler room, ice store, loading platforms, and other office space. Large cans were used to mold the ice. When ice was needed, workers would operate a crane system to carry the ice block into a warm water bath where the ice could be removed from the reusable can. Although working at an ice plant was known as dangerous and hard work, employees enjoyed a steady well paid job. By 1928, the Rand Yard Ice House employed 73 African-American workers. The average refrigerated car could carry about 400 crates of celery. Sometimes farmers, with smaller shipments, would work out a deal to share a boxcar. These were non-mechanical refrigerated cars, cooled by insulated bunkers in each end, which were loaded through a roof hatch with several tons of block ice. In 1926, the Mountain Ice Company of Chicago built a huge ice plant in the Rand railroad yard near the town of Lake Monroe. This big facility, with its 700 ton storage capacity, kept up with demands for ice by operating 24 hours around the clock. It ranked second in the Nation for ice production, and in volume size, was Seminole County's largest building. Likewise, the Rand railyards, were among the busiest switch yards in the Southeast. On the eastside, farmers were serviced by a branch ice house on Beardall Avenue, which at one time was operated by Charlie Carlson Sr. In 1926, F. F. Dutton, using methods for precooling citrus, developed a way to precool celery for shipment. Dutton operated large packing houses on Sipes and French avenues. In June 1928, the Dutton Packing House on Sipes Avenue, burned to the ground in a huge fire. In spite of a forty-percent drop in farm prices, Carl Carlson's best celery years were between 1921 and 1924, when he was getting between two and six bucks per crate. He now owned a 1921 Model T touring car and a 1923 Model T flatbed truck. But all plowing was still done by mules and horses, which also pulled the 50 gallon spray wagon for applying insecticides to the fields. Carl put more faith in his work animals than he did motorized vehicles. Ice industry--United States Fuel--United States Buildings--Florida Description Newspaper article on City of Sanford's failed efforts to condemn the dilapidated Hunter Ice and Fuel Company building located at 700 West Thirteenth Street in 2007. According the the article, the building's owner, John McFarland, could avoid having the factory condemned if he complies with city building codes. Prior to starting an ice manufacturing business in Sanford, owner Duval W. Hunter, Sr., operated an ice house in North Carolina which supplied ice for in-home use. In 1952, the Hunter moved his ice manufacturing business to Sanford because of the higher demand to cool and preserve agricultural goods. Prior to ice manufacturing, states along the east coast of the United States relied on harvested ice from frozen lakes and ponds shipped from New England. Many southern states during the 1860s began relying on ice manufacturing once the shipment of harvested ice from the northern states ceased. During the late-1800s, individual ice factories were comprised of a machine room, boiler room, ice store, loading platforms, and other office space. Large cans were used to mold the ice. When ice was needed, workers would operate a crane system to carry the ice block into a warm water bath where the ice could be removed from the reusable can. While giving a status report during Monday's City Commission meeting, City Manager Sherman Yehl and Building Official Dan Florian informed commissioners that the building and its plumbing and electrical systems are now in compliance with city building codes as deter¬mined by a final inspection that took place last week. Bringing the building into compliance ends the city's efforts to condemn the historic building built in 1952. When the building fell into a state of disrepair, and little was done to stave off its deterioration, some in the community and on the commission argued that the building had become an "eye¬sore" and condemnation proceedings were started. McFarland and his attorneys then argued that he should be given the opportunity to bring the building up to code so he could sell the property with the building intact, thus increasing its resale value in the owner's opinion. According to the county tax appraiser's office, Web site, the building and property had a taxable value of $182,000 when last appraised — although McFarland believes its value to be much higher. As he left City Hall Monday night, accompanied by his wife, Sherry, a relieved McFarland said, "I’m glad it's over. This is my 401K and I need it to retire.” Tuesday morning McFarland said, "It was a tough fight, but we saved the ice house," pointing out that he spent a good chunk of his own money to bring the building back into compliance. McFarland said he planned to meet with a real estate agent later in the day to begin the process of putting the property up for sale. The icehouse building is zoned GC-2 (General Commercial). Dan Florian stated Monday night that before any use of the building is allowed, additional site and building improvements may be necessary depending on what uses are proposed. Ice industry--United States Fuel--United States Buildings--Florida Laborers Workers Employees--Florida Description The Hunter Ice & Fuel Company, formerly located at 700 West Thirteenth Street in Sanford, Florida, sometime between 1952 and 1959. Prior to starting an ice manufacturing business in Sanford, owner Duval W. Hunter, Sr., operated an ice house in North Carolina which supplied ice for in-home use. In 1952, the Hunter moved his ice manufacturing business to Sanford because of the higher demand to cool and preserve agricultural goods. Prior to ice manufacturing, states along the east coast of the United States relied on harvested ice from frozen lakes and ponds shipped from New England. Many southern states during the 1860s began relying on ice manufacturing once the shipment of harvested ice from the northern states ceased. During the late-1800s, individual ice factories were comprised of a machine room, boiler room, ice store, loading platforms, and other office space. Large cans were used to mold the ice. When ice was needed, workers would operate a crane system to carry the ice block into a warm water bath where the ice could be removed from the reusable can. Chillingworth, and A. R. Beaujean organized a company that planned on erecting an electric light plant and ice factory in the city. The Diamond Ice Company planned to enlarges its 20-ton ice and cold storage plant in Gainesville. Title Ice Houses of Sanford Collection Description This collection features the various ice houses and ice plants that have existed in Sanford, Florida. Ice manufacturing became a prominent industry in the United States by the beginning of the twentieth century. Most ice houses consisted of two stories with the first floor used as food storage and the second floor used to store the ice. Ice houses provided blocks of ice for home ice boxes and allowed agricultural businesses to transport their fruits and vegetables in refrigerated vehicles. Description Vegetables being crated for shipment by rail during the first quarter of the twentieth century. Each boxcar was refrigerated by blocks of ice provided by local ice houses in Sanford. With the introduction of ice houses and refrigeration, farmers were able to harvest their crops more efficiently and to take in more profits from the better preserved fruits and vegetables. Farmers in relied on local ice houses to better preserve their crops before and during transport to markets. Box cars were also refrigerated to ensure that produce crops remained fresh until they were sold. Many farmers in Sanford, Florida grew celery during the early-1900s and utilized the local ice houses to store their produce. It was recommended that celery kept in ice refrigeration be stored at 32-34 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice-houses Description The former Crystal Ice Company building, which was located at 110 South Park Avenue in Sanford, Florida. The Crystal Ice Company was located here in 1915, and the Sanford Public Service ice house moved in by 1917. By 1922, the building became an ice storage shop. At the time that this photograph was taken in July 2011, the building was vacant.
