Alexander Thompson was born around 1793, in New York City to Alexander Thompson Sr. and Amelia Thompson née De Hart. Thompson Jr. had one brother, William, and three sisters, Margaret, Catherine, and Amelia. His father, Alexander Sr., died in 1809, and one year later, Thompson Jr. entered the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated early because of the onset of the War of 1812, in which he participated as a lieutenant. When the war ended, Thompson continued in military service, rising through the ranks until he became lieutenant colonel in 1837. During this period, he also married Mary Nexsen. They had no surviving children. In 1837, his 6th Infantry Regiment was sent to participate in the Second Seminole War. Thompson died leading his regiment at the Battle of Okeechobee on December 25, 1837. He is buried at the US Military Academy Post Cemetery at West Point and commemorated at the St. Augustine National Cemetery in Florida.

Gordon Swift was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, in 1803. Sometime prior to his enlistment in 1837, Swift moved to Marietta, Ohio, where he married Elizabeth Tucker in 1828. Swift worked as a farmer before enlisting in the United States Army out of Utica, New York, at age thirty-four. Swift joined Company F of the 6th Infantry Regiment, which was sent to Florida during the Second Seminole War (1835-1842.) Rose died two days after the Battle of Okeechobee, on December 27, 1837. He is memorialized at St. Augustine National Cemetery in Florida.

John Slade Gatlin was born in 1806 to a prominent family in Kinston, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina in 1826, and served as an apprentice under a local doctor. On August 3, 1834, he entered the United States Army as an assistant surgeon. In 1835, Gatlin was assigned to Fort Brooke in Tampa, Florida, then ordered to travel with Dade’s company to Fort King. He died on December 28, 1835, during the Dade Massacre. He, is memorialized at St. Augustine National Cemetery in Florida.

On July 14, 1943, Wimbush enlisted in the United States Army, where he reported to duty at Camp Blanding near Starke, Florida. He eventually served with Company H as part of the 25th Infantry Regiment of the 93rd Division. Wimbush and his segregated regiment served in the Pacific Theater of World War II, serving in both a labor and combat capacity. Wimbush received an honorable discharge on November 29, 1946. After the war ended, Wimbush returned to St. Augustine, where he lived until his death on January 14, 1949, at the age of twenty-eight. He is buried in Saint Augustine National Cemetery in Saint Augustine, Florida in Section E, Plot 25.

Charles E.T. Wade was born in the West Indies and migrated to Maryland. Before serving in the United States Army, he worked as a laborer. On March 25, 1899, Wade enlisted as a Private in the Company K Ninth United States Cavalry Regiment in Baltimore, Maryland. He served in the Western United States, escorting funds for Native Americans. In the early 1900s, during the Philippine-American War, the Ninth Cavalry was stationed in the Philippine Islands, guarding small villages and military bases. Wade was honorably discharged on March 24, 1902, in Draga, Philippines, and remained there following his service. He married a Philippine woman named Seage Awai Soong and had a daughter, Federica Wade, born in 1910. On July 2, 1935, Wade traveled back to the United States and died three years later on December 10, 1938, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was interned at St. Augustine National Cemetery on December 28, 1938, in section A row 218.

On March 25, 1899, Wade enlisted as a Private in the Company K Ninth United States Cavalry Regiment in Baltimore, Maryland. He served in the Western United States, escorting funds for Native Americans. In the early 1900s, during the Philippine-American War, the Ninth Cavalry was stationed in the Philippine Islands, guarding small villages and military bases. Wade was honorably discharged on March 24, 1902, in Draga, Philippines, and remained there following his service. He married a Philippine woman named Seage Awai Soong and had a daughter, Federica Wade, born in 1910. On July 2, 1935, Wade traveled back to the United States and died three years later on December 10, 1938, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was interned at St. Augustine National Cemetery on December 28, 1938, in section A row 218.

John then married Rhoda Spicket. Their son, William, was born in 1925. When the United States entered World War II, John registered for the Old Man’s Draft. In February of 1950, John and Rhoda divorced. John then married Gloria Shields later that year. In 1952, the couple moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. John passed away in 1955 and is interred in the Bay Pine National Cemetery.

After the war ended, Phillip returned to Jacksonville, where he resumed work in the railroad industry and met his future wife, Mary Jeanette "Janie" Roberts. They married on August 15, 1921. Mary gave birth to their daughter, Martha Rose, on August 5, 1922. Mary passed in 1925 due to tuberculosis. Phillip remarried on July 27, 1929, to Harriett Rhynard, but they divorced in 1934. Sometime after, Phillip moved to Clearwater, Florida. In April 1942, Phillip registered for the World War II Young Man's Draft but was not called into service. He worked as a member of the barracks in the area. He passed away on December 22, 1945, two days before his forty-seventh birthday. He is buried in the Bay Pines National Cemetery at Section 11 Row 1 Site 10.

Bert Collier Davison (1892-1945) was born on July 28, 1890, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Anna Davison and Robert Davison. At the age of nineteen, Davison started a career in pharmaceutical sales. He registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, and was inducted into the United States Army on June 26, 1918. He left from France aboard the USS Zeelandia on September 8, 1917, and was assigned to the Administrative Labor Army Service Corps of the Quartermaster Corps. Near the end of the war, he earned a promotion to Corporal on October 1, 1918. Davison was tasked to stay with the Third Army during the occupation of the Rhineland after the war officially ended and did not depart from Europe until October 19, 1919. The work he did during the occupation earned Davison a promotion to Sergeant on May 20, 1919. He was honorably discharged on November 5, 1919. After returning home, Davison continued his work in pharmaceutical sales at Budd’s Pharmacy in St. Petersburg, Florida. He opened his own pharmacy in 1926. In April of the same year, Davison married Johanna Horstmann, a German woman. In August 1929, Davison shifted trades from pharmaceuticals to tires when he became the manager of a Firestone tire store and filling station. In 1930, Davison moved from Firestone to Goodrich tires. He had major surgery at the Mound Park Hospital in St. Petersburg in July 1930, followed by six weeks of recovery. Ultimately, his health issues would cause him to retire early at the age of forty-seven in early 1940. Davison died in 1945 from what his wife called “a long illness.”

On March 20, 1951, Leo passed away in the Bay Pines Hospital after spending nearly his entire life in the St. Petersburg area. With the creation of the United States Army School of Aerial Photography at Kodak Park in Rochester, New York, commanding officer Captain Charles F. Betz approved the publication of The Airscout’s Snapshot as the school’s official paper. Produced weekly on Saturday by the soldier-students at Kodak Park, military officials believed the paper would contribute to the interest and efficiency of the school. For news columns, The Snapshot produced “short, pointed items, written without malice,” as every item became a ‘snapshot.’ All news published in the newspaper had to be censored by Captain Betz, as contributors could not submit questionable items. The newspaper ran from June 1, 1918 to December 4, 1918.

Thomas Robert Savage was born on March 27, 1892 in Eastern Shore, Virginia. Though little is known about his childhood and early life, we do know he could read and write. On June 5, 1917, Savage, like many, registered for the draft in Portsmouth, Virginia. It is likely he married his wife, Della, before being inducted and serving in Europe. He was inducted into the United States Army on August 3, 1918 and served as a corporal in Company C of the 540th Engineers. From October 27, 1918 to May 21, 1919, Savage and his unit worked overseas in a behind-the-lines role, repairing roads and building barracks to keep the rest of the army moving. After returning to the United States, he resumed life with his wife. They eventually moved to Maryland, where Savage worked as a driver. He died on April 7, 1941. He is buried in the St. Augustine National Cemetery, Florida at Section D Grave 3.

He registered for the draft, like many, on June 5, 1917, and was inducted into the United States Army in August 1918. From September 1918 to July 1919, Jackson served as a private in Company M of the 807th Pioneer Infantry. The unit served in a technical capacity, constructing and repairing infrastructure, and this work often brought them in direct action with the enemy. Jackson was discharged on July 9, 1919. He returned to Florida and married his wife, Lucille, with whom he had three children. He worked for the Flroida East Coast Railroad until his death on November 4, 1937. He is buried in the St. Augustine National Cemetery at Section A Grave 216.
