Description
Rock Ledge was officially founded in 1887, making it the oldest incorporated municipality in Brevard County, Florida. Early industry depended upon citrus and tourism. In the 20th century, the spelling changed to one word: Rockledge. Wealthy tourists continued to visit Rockledge, causing the town's population to increased ten times during winters. For much of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Rockledge was only accessible via boat and rail. In 1915, the Dixie Highway was completed, thus providing road access to the city.
