Scalzo started his career with Westinghouse's Aviation Gas Turbine Division in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1953 and then moved to the Small Steam & Gas Turbine Division headquarters in Lester, Pennsylvania, where he continued his work on industrial and power generation gas turbines. Around 1970, he was appointed Manager of Gas Turbine Engine Engineering, and was generally considered to be the "Father of the W501."
