Title First Unitarian Church of Orlando Collection Subject First Unitarian Church of Orlando Description Orlando Unitarian Universalists can follow their roots back to 1912, when Reverend Eleanor Gordon was first minister to a church formed with 21 members. Building Unity Chapel in 1913, the group shared literary and spirited discussions, fostered by transplanted Unitarians from the North. Property in an orange grove east of town was purchased in 1954. The congregation moved from Lake Eola to Robinson and Hampton once children’s religious education classrooms and a social/worship hall were built in 1958. Gore Hall was completed in 1963, and served as a worship facility for many years. The current modern Sanctuary was dedicated in January of 1995. Title Resolution on the Sunday Closing Law Alternative Title Orlando Ministerial Association's Resolution on the Sunday Closing Law Subject First Unitarian Church of Orlando Description The Orlando Ministerial Association's resolution on Florida Senate Bill no. 682, the Sunday Closing Law. According to the document, the association opposed the bill, whose referendum was scheduled for May 3, 1960, because they believed that establishing a religious day of worship for Orange County citizens would violate the First Amendment of the Constitution. The association also believed the proposed bill was discriminatory because it singled out special groups while allowing others to be exempt. In addition, the resolution claims that the proposed law gave county law enforcement agents the power to question a citizens about their religion, which violated the separation of church and state.
