RICHES Podcast Documentaries are short form narrative documentaries that explore Central Florida history and are locally produced. These podcasts can involve the participation or cooperation of local area partners. <br /><br />Episode 23 explores the history of the area that is now Hontoon Island State Park, located between the St. Johns River and the Hontoon Dead River in Volusia County, Florida. Archaeologists date inhabitation of Hontoon Island to 7,000 years ago. This podcast includes interviews with two archaeologists and two park rangers about what the archaeology tells us about the society and culture on the island in the last 7,000 years. In 1967, the island was purchased by the state and converted into a state park.
Abstract
This podcast looks at the history of the area that is now Hontoon Island State Park. Archaeologists now date inhabitation of Hontoon Island to 7000 years ago. Kim Hasbrouck speaks with two archaeologists and two park rangers about what the archaeology tells us about the society and culture on the island in the last 7000 years. It also touches briefly on the much shorter recent history.
