Chase and Company (Sanford, Fla.)
Description
Select images, correspondence, and other records from the Chase Collection (MS 14) at Special and Area Studies Collections at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. According to the biographical sketch in the collection's finding aid:
"The story of the Chases in Florida began in 1878 when Sydney Octavius Chase (1860-1941), having read about orange groves in Scribner's Magazine, came to Florida from Philadelphia. His brother, Joshua Coffin Chase (1858-1948), joined him in 1884 and together they formed Chase and Company that year. The Chase brothers came to Florida at the right time for Florida citrus and at the right time for them as investment entrepreneurs. Strong family ties in the North provided them with financial backing for their ventures. Joshua left Florida in 1895 to work in the California citrus industry. He returned to Florida in 1904 and rejoined his brother. Another brother, Randall, remained in Philadelphia and augmented his brothers' finances when convenient. Sydney and Joshua were also important civic leaders who took part in community development, most notably in the City of Sanford. Both were elected to the Sanford city commission. They also supported the development of Rollins College, worked with the Florida Historical Society, and were the benefactors of numerous charities.
Chase and Company began as an insurance company and branched out to storage facilities and fertilizer sales. The latter was the beginning of the company's lucrative agricultural supply division which remained in operation throughout the existence of the company. Although citrus was the primary interest, the company also invested in other agricultural pursuits including celery in central Florida, tung oil production in Jefferson County, and winter vegetables and sugar cane in the Lake Okeechobee muck lands. The company was also involved in the peach business in Georgia and North Carolina. The company was incorporated in 1914, with the Chase brothers owning 75 percent of the stock, and reincorporated in 1948. A second generation of Chases began its involvement in the family operations when Sydney O. Chase, Jr. ( b. 1890) became a citrus buyer in 1922. He was later joined by his brother Randall who served as president of Chase and Company from 1948-1965. Outside the Chase Family, Alfred Foster, W. R. Harney, and William "Billy" Leffler figured prominently as company executives and investors. The company dissolved in 1979 when its principal assets were sold to Sunniland for $5.5 million.
The Chases' interest in citrus began when Sydney came to Florida and became associated with General Henry S. Sanford. The Chases would eventually own General Sanford's experimental farm, Belair, and the Chase family home in Sanford was located there. Over the years, the Chases invested in a number of citrus groves and owned others outright. In 1912, they organized the Chase Investment Company as a holding company for their farms. Initially, the company operated the Isleworth, Nocatee, Belair, and Kelly citrus groves as well as celery farms in Sanford. The company was renamed Chase Groves, Inc. in 1951. From time to time, Chase Investment was involved in real estate in Florida and North Carolina. The latter included Fort Caswell, a former military property that was held for a time and then sold. Unquestionably, the jewel in the Chase crown was the Isleworth grove at Windermere. Isleworth's four hundred lake-tempered acres carried the Chases through many difficult times. It proved to be the principal asset at the company's demise when it was sold to golf legend Arnold Palmer in 1984. Chase Groves dissolved that same year, 100 years after the founding of Chase and Company."

Landis in regards to the Brevard County Road, a copy of a letter to Landis regarding a Ku Klux Klan demonstration in Sanford on the eve of an election, a rumor that Forrest Lake arranged for the KKK to intimidate African-American voters, and movement of fruit at Isleworth Grove. The second Klan was reformed in 1915 by William J. Simmons. Although the KKK deteriorated nationally during the Great Depression, it still flourished in Florida until a $685,000 lien was filed against the national Klan in 1944 for back taxes from the 1920s. In 1948, Dr. Samuel Green of Atlanta revived the KKK in Georgia, which spread to Florida and other states. In 1951, the Florida KKK responded violently to the activities of Harry Tyson Moore's Progressive Voters' League and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) during a period dubbed "The Florida Terror." As of the early 2000s, the Florida KKK remained to be on of the more active Klans in the country.

Description
Chase & Company was established by brothers Sydney Octavius Chase and Joshua Coffin Chase in 1884. The company sold insurance and later invested in storage facilities and fertilizer sales. Chase & Company was known mainly for its agricultural interests and maintained a series of citrus groves throughout Central Florida. The company was based out of Sanford and became one of the city's largest employers into the early twentieth century. By 1886, the Chase brothers purchased several citrus groves to expand their business, including Isleworth Grove in Windermere, Florida. Isleworth Grove covered a total of 1,300 acres along the Butler Chain of Lakes. Between 1894 and 1895, Central Florida was hit by several freezes and most of the citrus crop was destroyed. Chase & Company did not grow citrus crops again until 1904 when Joshua came back from an extended stay in California. Between 1894 and 1900, different types of pesticide equipment was created, including equipment driven by steam, machines, and horses.Randall Chase joined in the family business soon after his brother, Sydney Chase, Jr., did in 1922. Randall became the president of Chase & Company from 1948-1965. The Isleworth property stayed in the Chase family until 1984 when Franklin Chase, the son of Sydney Chase, sold the property to famed golfer Arnold Palmer.

March 14, 1929.
Mr. S. O. Chase,
Sanford, Florida.
Dear Syd:
ISLEWORTH. Upon my visit there this morning, Magunson and Hutchinson estimated the balance of the crop still to go as follows:
Mid-season oranges 11 cars
grapefruit 10 cars
Valencias 50 cars
There was a regular gale blowing and the sharp sand was cutting the tender growth on the trees, both young and old. It was especially severe on the new growth of trees recently planted.
Your instructions about irrigation are being carried out and the tractors were active. Crowell, Smith and Hutchinson are instructed to step on the picking and shipping of the balance of the mid-season oranges. The fruit is dead ripe and is not only going off in appearance but is also falling off. The Pineapples on the block near the packing house which are usually of splendid quality, are very inferior. Hutchinson is instructed to load in bulk all of the Coat of Arms grade. He is also instructed to include in the bulk car, any low and off grade grapefruit. It will pay us better to make up mixed cars of bulk oranges and grapefruit than to pack the Coat of Arms grade at the prices now ruling.
The inspector at the house expressed the opinion that there was much less fruit in the State than estimated by the Clearing House. He could not understand how it was possible for there to be 30,000 cars still to be shipped. He did not know where it was.
Very truly yours,
JCC:AF.

Mr. S. O. Chase,
P.O.Box 23,
Asheville, N. C.
Dear Syd:
This morning the writer spent several hours at Isleworth, driving over the main part of the grove with Crowell, Hutchinson, and Magnuson. We now have ready for movement several cars of grapefruit of good quality, but the sizes run so strong to 96s that the writer felt it would be poor judgement to pick. I also find that unusually small sizes are the poorest, smallest, the writer has ever found on the place at this season of the year. The fruit is dropping due to the dry weather. Crowell is now irrigating for the second time the principal blocks of tangerines and pineapples. The condition of the trees throughout the property is good. We did not go over to the Lake Butler place.
I am writing F. W. Davis calling his attention to the early varieties at Isleworth which would be in every way suitable to go forward in the first cars of bagged fruit. All of these varieties have very good eating qualities at the present time. Magnuson tells me that up to the present time we are about 8' of rainfall shy of normal at Isleworth. A cold winter would tear us wide open.
There has been a great big improvement in the quantity and quality of the fruit on the trees on that portion of the Island that you root pruned and trimmed last season.
Affectionately,
JCC:HMR.

SANFORD, FLORIDA
October 30, 1930.
Mr. S. O. Chase,
Office.
Dear Syd: ISLEWORTH:
The writer visited Isleworth five times since his return to the office. With the exception of two tracts all of the grapefruit has been picked over for 64s and larger. Lack of maturity has prevented any operations on the Mogul Block, which is carrying about half a crop.
We have cleaned up all of the Parson Browns, Norris Earlies, 16 to 1, and other early varieties, and also find that practically all of the oranges qualify, and can be moved. Hutchinson and Crowell have instructions to push orange picking operations and keep the fruit going.
Crowell states that with the exception of a little spraying the time of the force is taken up in picking up fruit. This expense is running about $50.00 a day, and exceeds the cost of picking. In the writer's opinion the dropping will be intensified with time, due to the injury to the bearing wood by Arsenical spray. By working in the grapefruit drops with the cannery stock we are able to make a little salvage to off-set the expense. We are writing Lee A. Strong today to see if there cannot be some modification of the clean-up regulations.
The writer also made the acquaintance of Hoidale, who is the successor of Doctor O'Kane. He is younger, but appeared to be a very fair young chap.
TANGERINES: The writer had Magnuson make a test, but the fruit failed to qualify. Magnuson will make two or more tests per week from now on, in the hope that some of the fruit will pass and permit a car to move prior to November 15.
MARSH SEEDLESS GRAPEFRUIT: The writer also requested a test of this fruit, which did not pass.
Yours very truly,
J.C.C.

Sept. 24 1921
Mr. S. O. Chase,
Sanford, Florida.
DEar Syd:
This will acknowledge your pencil note of the 23rd written after you reached Sanford. You do not make any mention of the trip, and hope it proved fairly comfortable. It certainly was awfully nice to find you here upon my arrival and I certainly appreciate the trouble and discomfort you underwent in order to be on hand.
Somehow we did not sees as much of each other Friday as I hoped would be the case. There were so many things that butted in that prevented talking over a number of matters in which we are both interested.
It is too infernally bad that Ross at Isleworth has quit cold after he has been carried during the entire summer. Can only hope that he has rendered sufficient service in over hauling the machinery and reequipping the packing house to make the expense worth while. If he had been white he would have given you an opportunity to go into this matter personally before he laid down.
Do you think you could get a wire to Lambert Ross wherever he is now, to secure a substitute? Whoever acts as superintendent should have the benefit of Ross' services in going over all of the changes and all of the improvements in the machinery and also the operation of the hot rooms so that same can be operated efficiently. If there is anything that I can do, let me know.
Enclosed find letter from Harney giving some interesting information about Heitman. His health for years has been poor and he is such a tough proposition that he will probably last longer than expected.
Regret to note the death of Mrs. Magnuson, but it may help to solve one of our problems and give us the services of Magnuson, who may prefer being away from his home rather than remaining without anyone to look after him.
I am trying to catch onto some of the matters

CHASE & CO.
SANFORD, FLORIDA
December 2, 1927.
Mr. E. Magnuson,
Windermere, Fla.
Dear Sir:
Now that your days of testing the fruit are at an end, I will want you to assist Hutchinson in the packing house, and endeavor to raise the grade and pack to a higher standard.
We want to have all the Isleworth fruit packed so it can go to auction or be sold F.O.B. My brother, J. C. Chase, will instruct you about the grade.
We want to avoid throwing too much fruit into the Coat-of-Arms grade, but want the Isleworth brand to carry the fruit of the proper texture, and which is not real russet. Some of the golden tipped russets can be included in the Isleworth grade.
More attention should be given to improving the bulge pack. In other words the pyramid pack should be followed, which is the nest name I know for the high pack. If small oranges are selected for the ends of the box, and large oranges for the center of the box the pack will show up the way the buyers like to get it, with a good full bugle in the center.
The fruit should be more carefully wrapped, especially the top layer. Every orange should be wrapped with a good, hard twist, so that the paper will be absolutely smooth and the box as a whole will present a very neat appearance. You know from the experience you had at Neamathla just what we want. We want to improve the Isleworth pack where ever it can be improved.
Yours very truly,
SOC:HMR.
