Description
Collection of digital images, documents, and other records contributed by the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation, located at 1 North Main Street in Winter Garden, Florida. This one-story masonry vernacular building was originally the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad depot. The earliest train depot on this site was a 16-by-20-foot small wooden shed built by farmers in 1893 so they could ship their produce to Jacksonville and St. Petersburg on the Orange Belt Railway. A second larger wooden terminal was built on the same site in 1906 by the Atlantic Coat Line Railroad. The current brick building was constructed around 1918. After the train depot closed around 1960, the building housed the Chamber of Commerce, then several other businesses. In 1998, Kay Chicone Ustler and Jerry Chicone Jr. donated $150,000 to the City of Winter Garden to purchase the building for use as a museum. The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation opened the museum one month later. The museum is still active and is open from 1-5 PM everyday, excluding holidays.

Description
The structure at 12 West Plant Street in Winter Garden, Florida, was the first brick commercial building built in 1912, after a 1909 fire destroyed all the downtown wood buildings. It was built by James Lafayette Dillard (1858-1943) and Benjamin T. Boyd, both of whom served on Winter Garden's first City Commission.

Originally, it housed a bakery operated by Albert E. Jones and a real estate company operated by Dillard. Lewis L. Kenneday opened the first Winter Garden theater in the second floor of the building about 1913. It operated until 1917, when it was replaced by the Lyric Theatre. In the 1920s, A. D. Mims, later a county commissioner, operated a barbershop along the Main Street storefront. A barber by the name of Allen Bland occupied the space later. Eighteen boarding rooms were available on the second floor after the theater closed. Various businesses, such as the Leader Department Store, the Winter Garden Pharmacy, Tibbals-Rexall Drugs, J. S. Reddick's meat market and a beer parlor, occupied the building at other times. At the time that this photograph was taken in 2014, the building was being occupied by Savoree.

Description
The Black Building, located at 101-121 West Plant Street in Winter Garden, Florida. This two-story brick Masonry Vernacular commercial building was constructed in 1921 by a businessman and citrus grower from Clermont named Robert E. Black. It initially contained apartments on the second story and a series of stores on the first. Several physicians maintained offices on the second floor. As a result, it was often referred to as the Clinic Building. During the 1930s, the building accommodated the office of the Florida Public Service Company and the post office. Arnold's and later McCord's Feed Store occupied space on the first floor. Raymond Dickson operated a plumbing and electric business in this building for more than 25 years. The neon sign advertising his business is still present. Today, the building houses several local businesses.

Description
Episode 18 of RICHES Podcast Documentaries: Winter Gardens 20th Century: Boom, Bust and Rebirth. RICHES Podcast Documentaries are short form narrative documentaries that explore Central Florida history and are locally produced. These podcasts can involve the participation or cooperation of local area partners.

Episode 18 explores the demographic changes of Winter Garden, Florida, during the 20th century. Originally a small agricultural hub, Winter Garden grew into a bustling suburbia in a short period of time. This episode focuses on Winter Garden's period of boom, bust and rebirth. Present-day Winter Garden was originally inhabited by Native Americans thousands of years before European colonization. Early European settlers began arriving in the area around Lake Apopka around 1845 with the encouragement of the Armed Occupation Act for settlement in the new State of Florida. The community began to grow rapidly when the Orange Belt Railway arrived in 1886 and citrus became the area's cash crop. A train depot was constructed in 1893 and the town was named Winter Garden. The area also became a popular tourist in the 1920s, nicknamed the "large-mouth bass capital." Winter Garden continued to thrive on citrus, proclaiming itself the largest citrus shipping point in the world during the 1940s. The citrus industry continued to boom throughout World War II, but quality dropped as Lake Apopka became polluted.
Abstract
In this podcast, we explore how the demographics of Winter Garden have changed over the last century, moving from an agricultural economy with small numbers of residents to a growing suburbia. Such a drastic shift in such a short period of time has caused many growing pains, but the city and its Winter Garden Heritage Foundation have found new and creative ways to rebuild their community.

Baptist Church
Description
The First Baptist Church of Winter Garden was originally organized in Ocoee, Florida, in August of 1888 with nine charter members. After eight years, the church voted to relocate to Winter Garden on land donated by James Lafayette Dillard (1858-1943). The first wooden building in Winter Garden was constructed at the southwest corner of Plant Street and Woodland Street. In 1921, members initiated a building campaign and commissioned architect J. J. Baldwin (1888-1955) to design a new building. The cornerstone of the present church was laid in 1922, and the church was completed in 1923 at a cost of $150,000, a substantial amount for a small community. R. W. Wimbish of Savannah, Georgia, supervised the construction of the church, as well as the Edgewater Hotel and the Black Building. Before the church was built on this property, Will Pennington operated a large saw mill here.

Hotels--Florida
Description
The Edgewater Hotel, located at 99 West Plant Street in Winter Garden, Florida. The hotel is a part of the Winter Garden’s National Historic Register Business District, was completed in 1926 and opened in 1927 with 53 guestrooms available. At opening, rooms were rented for $2 or $2.50 a night and the hotel included all the modern conveniences of those times: an elevator, telephones in each room with a switchboard operator downstairs, steam heat controls in each room, adjoining bathrooms, up-to-date plumbing and fire sprinklers throughout the facility. During the 1940s, players from several professional baseball clubs stayed here while training at Walker Fields.

The Edgewater Hotel closed in 1968 and remained dormant for approximately 25 years. When city officials began discussing demolition of the building in order to construct a parking lot, concerned citizens formed the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation (WGHF), a non-profit organization, to purchase and restore the building. Intervention by the WGHF became unnecessary when Max Blanchard and Mike Lanza bought the building for restoration in 1995. Eight years later, the hotel reopened as a bed-and-breakfast with shops and restaurants such as Scoops and The Chef's Table.

Description
This one-story commercial building in Winter Garden, Florida, was constructed in 1922 as part of land platted by J. D. McMillan in 1915. The building at 126 West Plant Street was originally owned by the McMillan-Bray Hardware Company. The store was founded in 1906 by George W. "Buttles" Bray and his brother-in-law, Malcolm Y. McMillan. After several years, Bray sold out to McMillan, who later sold the business to Joseph Bumby Hardware Company.

In 1920, Bray went back into the hardware business at another location, and in 1934, he moved the business back to this building after his original store and contents were destroyed by fire. His wife, Dora Bray, and his children, George Bray, Jr. and Evelyn Lease Bray, ran the business after his death in 1949. In 1983, the family sold the business to Walter Toole and Patti Toole. A year later, they joined the Ace Hardware franchise, and in 1987, they moved the business into a larger space on South Dillard Street. Since then, the space has been home to a number of restaurants. This building is known as the longest store in Winter Garden at only 20 feet wide and 177 feet long. At the time that this photograph was taken, the building was home to the Sweet Traditions French Bakery & Cafe.

Construction
Description
The construction of the First Baptist Church of Winter Garden, Florida, around 1922. The congregation was originally organized in Ocoee, Florida, in August of 1888 with nine charter members. After eight years, the church voted to relocate to 125 East Plant Street in Winter Garden, on land donated by James Lafayette Dillard (1858-1943). Before construction, which occurred in the early 1920s, the site was occupied by a small sawmill operated by Will Pennington. The first wooden building in Winter Garden was constructed at the southwest corner of Plant Street and Woodland Street.

In 1921, members initiated a building campaign and commissioned architect J. J. Baldwin to design a new building. The cornerstone of the present church was laid in 1922, and the church was completed in 1923 at a cost of $150,000, a substantial amount for a small community. The construction of the church was supervised by R. W. Wimbish, who also oversaw the construction of the Edgewater Hotel and the Black Building (now known as the Cappleman Building).

Banks and banking--Florida
Description
The Bank of Winter Garden, located on the corner of Main Street and Plant Street in Winter Garden, Florida, in the early 1900s. In 1908, James Lafayette Dillard (1858-1943) founded the Bank of Winter Garden. He would later become the Director and Vice President of the bank. During the 1912 fire, the bank survived even though Strozier Merchandise (seen on the left) and the Orange Hotel (seen on the right) were both destroyed. The Bank of Winter Garden closed in the 1929 crash and the building, enlarged with the addition of a second floor and expanded the west wall, became a department store, and later, a drug store and professional offices. In 1960, the bank was destroyed by a fire. In the picture, G. T. Smith, a bank cashier, is standing in the door of the bank.

Description
The City Station, located at the southeast corner of Dillard Street and Plant Street in Winter Garden, Florida, in 1924. Built by James Lafayette Dillard (1858-1943), this building was a combination of a gas station and a grocery store with upstairs apartments, a feature common to buildings of that time period. A gasoline pump can been seen just to the rear of the vehicle. Dillard is pictured with his second wife, Frances "Fannie" Bedingfield Dillard. On the left side in the background is the Wilson and Toomer Fertilizer building. At the right is the Roper Brothers packing house. City Station was torn down to make way for a new building, now the site of two restaurants.

His dry goods store moved to South Main Street.

Often called "Mr. First," Newton moved to Winter Garden, Florida, in 1892 where he was continually busy with varied pursuits in business, politics, and services. In his long line of being first, he established the first post office for the city, the first newspaper, was the first depot agent, and was Winter Garden's first mayor. He also ran a general merchandise store and worked as a cashier for the First National Bank of Winter Garden. Newton has been given the nickname of "Godfather of Winter Garden" for all of his achievements and milestones. In honor of his achievements, Newton Park at 31 West Garden Avenue is named in his honor.

Description
James Lafayette Dillard (1858-1943) built the Shelby Hotel in 1913 on 1 West Plant Street in Winter Garden, Florida. In this photograph, it is evident that construction was still in progress. The hotel was located a block away from both the Tavares & Gulf Railroad Company line and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) line.

Dillard migrated to Central Florida from Virginia with his wife, Mattie Showalter, in 1887. He established himself primarily as a citrus and vegetable grower, but he also operated the M. V. Dillard and Company Garage, which was managed by his son, Marvin Dillard. In addition, he founded the Bank of Winter Garden, served as Wnter garden City Commissioner and a Florida State Legislator, and helped rebuild Downtown Winter Garden after two destructive fires in 1909 and 1912. Some of the buildings that Dillard helped construct include the Dillard and Boyd General Merchandise Store, the Shelby Hotel, and the Mann and Mills Dry Goods Store. He also donated land to the First Baptist Church of Winter Garden.

In addition, he founded the Bank of Winter Garden, served as Winter Garden City Commissioner and a Florida State Legislator, and helped rebuild Downtown Winter Garden after two destructive fires in 1909 and 1912. Some of the buildings that Dillard helped construct include the Dillard and Boyd General Merchandise Store, the Shelby Hotel, and the Mann and Mills Dry Goods Store. He also donated land to the First Baptist Church of Winter Garden.
