Description
Chase & Company was established by brothers Sydney Octavius Chase and Joshua Coffin Chase in 1884. The company sold insurance and later invested in storage facilities and fertilizer sales. Chase & Company was known mainly for its agricultural interests and maintained a series of citrus groves throughout Central Florida. The company was based out of Sanford and became one of the city's largest employers into the early twentieth century. By 1886, the Chase brothers purchased several citrus groves to expand their business, including Isleworth Grove in Windermere, Florida. Isleworth Grove covered a total of 1,300 acres along the Butler Chain of Lakes. Between 1894 and 1895, Central Florida was hit by several freezes and most of the citrus crop was destroyed. Chase & Company did not grow citrus crops again until 1904 when Joshua came back from an extended stay in California. Between 1894 and 1900, different types of pesticide equipment was created, including equipment driven by steam, machines, and horses.Randall Chase joined in the family business soon after his brother, Sydney Chase, Jr., did in 1922. Randall became the president of Chase & Company from 1948-1965. The Isleworth property stayed in the Chase family until 1984 when Franklin Chase, the son of Sydney Chase, sold the property to famed golfer Arnold Palmer.

Mr. Corbett Hutchinson,
Windermere, Florida.
Dear Sir:
Referring to the telephone conversation this morning about packing some of the third grade oranges in plain boxes and including in cars moving to New York.
The writer believes that if you can sell all of this fruit to peddlers at $1.50, or better, it would pay more, net, than taking a chance. However, he is perfectly willing to have you make the experiment, provided you exclude the large sizes, which will run coarse and punk. You will note from reports of sales you are getting that the sizes that are drawing a premium are from 200s to 324s.
The writer will be away from the office Thursday, Friday and Saturday and return to his home Sunday evening. You had better call him there Monday morning. If weather conditions improve, be sure to have picked and in the packing house for Monday morning enough to put out not less than two carloads. We want these two cars to leave on Monday in order to sell in New York on Friday, the 24th. The rain will probably cause a let-up on picking operations and help clean up the market.
Yours truly ,

Mr. S. O. Chase,
Atlanta, Gerogia.
Jan 31 1927
Dear Syd:
ISLEWORTH: the writer has just returned from there. They are now picking tangerines across the canal and expect to finish Wednesday. During the last week the fruit has deteriorated greatly, due to hot weather, and is showing the effects of the cold. They only had twelve pickers at work in spite of the fact that the writer has been after Browne for the last two weeks to increase his picking force. Instead of getting larger it has really shrunk.
During the past few days the weather has been very hot and the trees on the higher parts of the grove are beginning to show signs of wilting. There is one block of trees near where the young alligator pears are planted that should be irrigated, and the writer so advised Browne. Unfortunately, making up the plat is a good excuse for Browne attending to this job and not getting on the outside. Browne is instructed to get together some additional pickers, using some in clearing up the tangerines and others in picking fruit from some of the trees that are dropping heavily. We also want this increased force to use in picking the pineapples, which will soon begin to drop heavily.
I am very much in hopes that when you reach Atlanta you will find conditions there in such shape that you can get back here some time this week.
glad to report that the Valencias are holding on in good shape but there is a big waste in the grapefruit. Fred Lord, of Lord & Spencer, is now at Titusville going over McNiff's holdings and is due to reach here Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. He wanted a price on the pineapple oranges now en route to New York but we decided not to make any changes in our marketing plans. We may make him a price on the last car from the White and Kiser Groves. The White GRove picked over 1200 field boxes.
Stanley is instructed to pick all other varieties except the Valencias from all the trees in that block, and then make his arrangements to pick the seedling oranges from the Goodall Grove. In this way we can keep some fruit moving from that territory during the next month or six weeks. When Lord is here on Wednesday I will take him out to Isleworth and see if I can interest him in the balance of the grapefruit. If we can make a guarantee joint account deal[?], we may do so.
Yours very truly,
JCC/fs

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA
Sept 20 1919
Mr. S. O. Chase,
Sanford, Florida.
Dear Syd:
ISLEWORTH: Note yours of the 19th reporting on your visit to Isleworth. From your report the grapefruit is not yet sufficiently colored or sufficiently matured to give satisfaction to the customer. We wish we could do something to improve the color as that is the matter that counts.
Just as soon as you can give a date to start picking operations arrange to do so as we believe the bulk of the fruit now going forward consists of small sizes that have colored up and the large sizes will command a premium especially at auction. last year we disposed of the bulk of the Isleworth crop at New York auction.
Very glad to have such a good report on the general appearance of the trees and the fruit. Yesterday Mr. Skinner took the joy out of life by telling me of a prediction made by a man who foretold the Key West hurricane, that we would be visited by a very severe freeze on or before December 15th. This man gave very good reasons why this disaster should overtake the present crop. We hope Isleworth escapes.
Yours very truly,

CITRUS FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
SANFORD, FLORIDA
October 30, 1930.
Mr. S. O. Chase,
Office.
Dear Syd: ISLEWORTH:
The writer visited Isleworth five times since his return to the office. With the exception of two tracts all of the grapefruit has been picked over for 64s and larger. Lack of maturity has prevented any operations on the Mogul Block, which is carrying about half a crop.
We have cleaned up all of the Parson Browns, Norris Earlies, 16 to 1, and other early varieties, and also find that practically all of the oranges qualify, and can be moved. Hutchinson and Crowell have instructions to push orange picking operations and keep the fruit going.
Crowell states that with the exception of a little spraying the time of the force is taken up in picking up fruit. This expense is running about $50.00 a day, and exceeds the cost of picking. In the writer's opinion the dropping will be intensified with time, due to the injury to the bearing wood by Arsenical spray. By working in the grapefruit drops with the cannery stock we are able to make a little salvage to off-set the expense. We are writing Lee A. Strong today to see if there cannot be some modification of the clean-up regulations.
The writer also made the acquaintance of Hoidale, who is the successor of Doctor O'Kane. He is younger, but appeared to be a very fair young chap.
TANGERINES: The writer had Magnuson make a test, but the fruit failed to qualify. Magnuson will make two or more tests per week from now on, in the hope that some of the fruit will pass and permit a car to move prior to November 15.
MARSH SEEDLESS GRAPEFRUIT: The writer also requested a test of this fruit, which did not pass.
Yours very truly,
J.C.C.

Mr. S. O. Chase,
P.O.Box 23,
Asheville, N. C.
Dear Syd:
This morning the writer spent several hours at Isleworth, driving over the main part of the grove with Crowell, Hutchinson, and Magnuson. We now have ready for movement several cars of grapefruit of good quality, but the sizes run so strong to 96s that the writer felt it would be poor judgement to pick. I also find that unusually small sizes are the poorest, smallest, the writer has ever found on the place at this season of the year. The fruit is dropping due to the dry weather. Crowell is now irrigating for the second time the principal blocks of tangerines and pineapples. The condition of the trees throughout the property is good. We did not go over to the Lake Butler place.
I am writing F. W. Davis calling his attention to the early varieties at Isleworth which would be in every way suitable to go forward in the first cars of bagged fruit. All of these varieties have very good eating qualities at the present time. Magnuson tells me that up to the present time we are about 8' of rainfall shy of normal at Isleworth. A cold winter would tear us wide open.
There has been a great big improvement in the quantity and quality of the fruit on the trees on that portion of the Island that you root pruned and trimmed last season.
Affectionately,
JCC:HMR.

Mr. S. O. Chase.
Sanford, Florida.
Dear Syd:-
This will acknowledge yours of the 7th, and note all you have to say. There is no question in my mind but what the Isleworth grapefruit is better in size, maturity and quality than the grapefruit now being shipped by the Manatee Fruit Company. Mouser is of the same opinion, and expressed himself when here this morning of taking the matter up with Mayo to see if a permit could not be issued to have it move under the color scheme if it did not qualify under the color scheme if it did not qualify under the test. Unless we can realize on these large sizes they will soon become unmerchantable.
We both know that large sizes full of juice are wanted early in the season and not wanted late in the season. A little sugar will very readily overcome the excess acidity. Grapefruit are eaten by adults and do not go to children, babies or invalids. Consequently it is not absolutely important to have the early fruit as sweet as the late fruit.
The authorities do not appear to have the ability to put a stop to the shipments of the Manatee Fruit Company and we do not believe they could touch Isleworth if we conform to the color scheme and do not artificially color. This would make it necessary to use the utmost care in picking. I certainly would like to move five or ten thousand boxes of this fruit on the present market if there is any way it can be done.
Your very truly,
JCC/FS

Mr. S. O. Chase,
Sanford, Florida.
Dear Syd:
Tried to reach you this morning from the house but found that you were not expected back until some time this afternoon. Hope you had a comfortable trip and all hands returned in good trim.
I visited Isleworth this morning and found the fruit coming to the house was of good texture but mostly Bronze or Golden, with a small percentage of Bright. I talked the matter over with Hutchinson and finally decided to make the regular Isleworth Grade, which is being packed under Chase Brand, and the same grade in golden or bronze, also packed under Chase Brand. This will make the cars going out Chase grade and Chase grade golden. The balance will be Coat of Arms. There may be six or eight hundred boxes of this grade of fruit.
I did not visit where the picking operations were going on as I was there last week. The fruit is still over-running the original estimates.
I instructed the picking force to pick the Valencias on the island as long as they have their field boxes and ladders down there in that part of the grove. This will make the final picking of Valencias from the block east of the packing house.
I did not see Browne, but drove over the property, branching off from the bungalow for over the hill and back along Lake Laura. None of the trees showed any indications of suffering from dry weather. Neither did any of the trees on the groves along the road show any wilt. Noah appeared to think that Browne and his force were doing a very good job in giving the ground a good wetting.
Noah tells me that the Roadway Department find that the last line east of the grove that crosses Lake Butler Tibbett and the south end of the island, and then into Overstreet's, will cost $10,000.00 more to build than the road through the grove. He also stated that the Windermere people were putting on all the pressure they could to have the new road go through the center of the grove and not along the lakefront as originally agreed. This information comes to him through confidential sources, and he wants an opportunity to talk matters over with sources, and he wants an opportunity to talk matters over with you just as soon as you return. You know this Windermere outfit
Mr. S. O. Chase -2-
do not stop at anything when they want something. He also made the statement that the Windermere route is the route favored by Browne.
Noah also wanted to see you concerning the cost of clearing two tracts of land, as he thought it would be advisable for you to have the cleared land remeasured and then determine something about costs. Will explain this to you when we meet.
Yours very truly,
JCC/fs
