Description
The Program of the Board of Supervisors of the Seminole Soil and Water Conservation District for 1963. The organization began in 1948 with a goal to assist in agricultural interests. Over the years, the Seminole Soil and Water Conservation District began to also concentrate on the development and management of recreational enterprises. Their interests also entailed inventory and evaluations for land uses and solving issues concerning soil and water resources. The fourteen page program from 1963 discusses the history of the organization and contains information pertaining to the goals of the Seminole Soil Conservation District as well as the major problems they face regarding water control, soil depletion, erosion control, wildlife, land use, livestock, egg production, and recreational and rural land development.

Description
A memorandum from the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission to the Florida Air and Water Pollution Control Commission. This memo discusses the history of pollution in the lakes at the headwaters of the Ocklawaha River basin, specifically Lake Dora, Lake Eustis, Lake Harris, Little Lake Harris, Lake Griffin, and Lake Apopka. The memo identifies the three sources of pollution into these lakes as citrus processing, sewage treatment outfall, and farm waste discharge. The memo outlines the monetary values of the sportfishing and commercial fishing industry on the lakes, as well as detailing the historical change in the makeup of fish populations. The memo also explores the increase in fish kill frequency in these lakes, before ending with a request to the commission for an increase in outreach efforts regarding water pollution.

Frye states that the seining experiments in Lake Griffin are not yet complete, and that in general, seining alone will not be sufficient to restore Lake Apopka. Frye stresses the need for a concerted effort between government agencies to begin restoring the lake.

Aerial View of Tarpon Springs Postcard
Subject
Tarpon Springs (Fla.)
Description
A postcard depicting an aerial view of the town of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and all of its waterways. The earliest Americans settlers to Tarpon Springs came following the American Civil War. The town was first promoted by Hamilton Disston (1844-1896) as a town for relaxation and health. In early 1987, Tarpon Springs became the first city to be incorporated on the Pinellas Peninsula. The Orange Belt Railway first arrived in 1887 and sponge harvesting became a prime industry in the area. Tarpon Springs thrived during the Florida land boom of the 1920s and collapsed when the rest of the state bust in 1926, which also saw the devastation of a major hurricane. Despite the land bust and the Great Depression, the sponge industry continued to thrive until 1938, when a blight infested the sponge beds. Instead, the city turned to tourism, capitalizing on its rich Greek culture.

This postcard is part of a collection of postcards kept by Lucile Campbell, a schoolteacher in Sanford, Florida, for 30 years. In 1931, she took advantage of a special rate for teachers and sailed to Europe, where she traveled for several months and is thought to have acquired many of these postcards. During the 1940-1941 school year, Campbell taught at Sanford Grammar School. Before her retirement in 1970, she taught at many other area schools, including the Oviedo School, Westside Grammar School, and Pinecrest Elementary School. Campbell used these postcards as aids in her classrooms to teach advanced subjects, such as Shakespearean drama. The collection, along with her other teaching aids, papers, and photographs, was later found at Sanford Grammar School after it became the University of Central Florida's Public History Center. Campbell's postcard collection and photographs provide insight into the life of a respected Florida educator.

Sunken Gardens Postcard
Subject
Gardens--United States
Description
A postcard depicting a view of the Sunken Gardens, which were built in 1901 for the Inter-State and West Indian Exposition, a business fair. After the fair was over, Charleston established Hampton Park, where the Sunken Gardens remain as a landscaped lake.

Lakes--Europe
Description
A postcard depicting an illustrated aerial view of a Lake Geneva harbor. The lake is located on the north side of the Alps and is shared by Switzerland and France.

Description
A report by the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission detailing the results of an experimental seining of Lake Apopka in Florida. Seining was evaluated as a potential method of removing nutrients from the lake by capturing and removing large amounts of rough fish. This method proved both inefficient and economically inviable. The Commission investigated selling the rough fish captured for use as fertilizer, but were unable to capture amounts large enough to be economically feasible. The report also notes a massive increase in the gar population, and attributes this to the decline in the lake's health, as gar are able to fill an ecological niche that other fish cannot. The report ultimately concludes seining operations on Lake Apopka will be useless until pollution discharges into the lake are halted.

Description
A letter from Harold L. Moody, River Fishery Project Leader for the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, to James B. Lackey. Lackey was hired by Lake County and Orange County to study water quality in Lake Apopka and the Ocklawaha River in Florida. Moody's letter discusses his collecting of water samples, which he had sent to Lackey for examination. The samples were collected after fish kills on the lake. Moody states both kills were associated with discharge from the Winter Garden sewage treatment plant.

Description
A letter from James B. Lackey, a water and waste biological consultant, to Harold L. Moody, the River Fishery Project Leader at the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, discussing water samples from Lake Apopka in Florida. Lackey, a retired University of Florida professor, was hired by Lake and Orange counties to study water quality in Lake Apopka and the Harris Chain of Lakes. In the letter, Lackey describes the samples as representing highly over-fertilized water, and expects annual fish kills on Lake Apopka if the fertilizer loading from the Zellwood farms is not stopped.

Description
A letter from Harold L. Moody, a fisheries biologist, to John W. Woods, chief of the Fisheries Division for the Florida Game and Freshwater Commission. The letter discusses aquatic vegetation in Lake Apopka. Moody states that heavy rainfall has helped dilute pollution in the lake and improved light penetration in the water, decreasing the algae content and allowing limited regrowth of certain aquatic plants. These plants were once the dominant vegetation in the lake. Moody believes that this regrowth is temporary unless the inflow of nutrients and pollution can be halted.

Orlando Collection
Description
The Orlando area was originally occupied by the Creek and Seminole tribes. In 1838, Fort Gatlin was erected on the shores of Lake Gatlin, just a few miles south of present-day Downtown Orlando. Centered around Church Street, Orlando became a city in 1884.

Originally a cattle town, Orlando grew into a major citrus growing center by the 1920s. The city continued to grow during the Great Depression with aid from the Work Progress Administration (WPA). During World War II, Orlando became a major military center as well, with the development of the McCoy Air Force Base and Pinecastle Air Force Base, and with the addition of the Naval Training Center (NTC) Orlando in 1968. Downtown Orlando declined in the 1960s and 1970s. Redevelopment began in the 1970s and continued into the 1980s, with projects such as the Church Street Station entertainment complex. In 1998, a building boom began and continued through the 2000s.

Fountains--Florida
Parks--Florida
Description
A postcard showing the Sperry Fountain on the southern shore of Lake Eola in Downtown Orlando, Florida. The fountain was named in honor of Frank E. Sperry (1843-1916), Mayor of Orlando from 1913 to 1916. Lake Eola and the surrounding park are one of the unusual features that sets the city of Orlando apart from other places. From its earliest days, Downtown Orlando was situated on the west side of the lake. As the town grew into a city, Lake Eola continued to be a focal point for the inhabitants, who used it for bathing, swimming, and fishing, while on its shores people picnicked and listened to concerts and religious services. Much of the land around Lake Eola was donated to Orlando by Jacob Summerlin (1820-1893), who designated that it be a public park. It has remained one ever since. The rest of the park land was donated by the Musselwhite family and Mayor Sperry.

Once Sperry had settled in Orlando, he started the South Florida Foundry and Machine Works, which developed into a large enterprise and Orlando's first real industry. Sperry was active in the business for a number of years, but sold out his interest because of failing health. He also began to have a great interest in the growing of citrus in the county. He served as Mayor of Orlando and was also a member of the Park Commission. In 1913, while serving with the Park Commission, he donated the final piece of land on Lake Eola that completed a ring around the lake. On that land, he donated $2,000 to place a fountain that stands to this day and bears his name as a reminder of his generosity. The fountain, made of wrought iron was described as a "large acanthus leaf with a duck base surmounted by a bittern set in an octagonal masonry basin with eight vases." At the base of the fountain there is a plaque with the following statement: "This fountain donated by Frank E. Sperry, Mayor 1914 - 1916."

Title

Description
Discovery Island, located at the Walt Disney World Resort Bay Lake near Orlando, Florida, in September of 1991. Before the arrival of Walt Disney World, the 11.5-acre island was called Raz Island, in honor of the family that inhabited it. In the late 1930s, Delmar "Radio Nick" S. Nicholson (1898-1978) purchased the property and renamed it Idle Bay Isle. Twenty years later, the island was sold and renamed Riles Island, which was used as retreat for hunting.

Disney finally bought the island in 1965, prior to the construction of the Walt Disney World Resort. On April 8, 1974, the property opened to guests as Treasure Island. Some years later, it was designated as a zoological park and renamed Discovery Island. On April 8, 1999, the park was closed to the public and all animals were relocated to Disney's Animal Kingdom or other zoos. Despite talks of developing Myst Island in cooperation of the developers of the video game Myst, the park remains closed to the public.

Description
Postcard showing Memorial High School, located at 151 East Washington Street. The school was constructed by J. C. Hanner in 1922 and dedicated on December 3, 1922. The building was designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style and was named Memorial High School in honor of the "Orange County Boys who gave their lives in the World War." The building housed Orlando Memorial High School from 1922 to 1927, Memorial Junior High School from 1925 to 1958, and Orlando City Hall in 1961.

In 1961, the building was sold to Roland M. Mumford, president of the Meyer Hotel of Jacksonville for $400,077.77. The school was demolished in 1961, and the Robert Meyer Hotel, later named the Kahler Plaza Inn, was erected on the site. In 1973, Harry Helmsley bought it and added it to his chain of Harley hotels. The Harley went into a slow decline under the stewardship of Helmsley's wife Leona, prompting a sort of rock & roll aesthetic to pick up where the Helmsley dynasty left off. The Sheraton eventually picked up the property and injected $9 million into shaping it up. In the early 2000s, Sheraton sold the property and it was renovated once again into a condominium called The Metropolitan.

Description
Lake Lucerne is one of two primary lakes connected with the earliest days of the city of Orlando, Florida. Along with Lake Eola, it defined one of the natural borders of the young town in the 1860s and 1870s. Lake Lucerne sits at the southern end of the Downtown Orlando area. Today Orange Avenue, the main north-south street through the city, crosses the lake on a causeway which nearly divides the lake in half. The East-West Expressway passes directly to the north. The area was one of the first areas developed with houses outside the business district and continues to be one of the jewels of Orlando's park system. The postcard shows two homes, one of which (on the left) is the Dr. Phillips House which was built in 1893 and is currently on the National Register of Historic Places.
