A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of the Oviedo Garage, a complete automotive service business located at 139 North Central Avenue in Downtown Oviedo, Florida, operated by Bob Slavik and Helen Slavik. The garage was built within the first decade after the end of World War II. At the time that this photograph was printed in <em>The Seminole Outlook</em>, the building was owned by the Oviedo Tire Center. The site later became the location of the Townhouse Restaurant, which has since been demolished for road improvements.

A painting of Lake Jesup in 2012 by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida. One of the largest lakes in Central Florida, Lake Jesup is located along the middle basin of the St. Johns River. In the 1990s, after decades of pollution, the lake was cleaned up by a coalition consisting of the Friends of Lake Jesup, the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD), the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). In 2008, the Florida State Road (SR) 46 bridge was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (CoE) and the FDOT to cross the lake.

The trail was created from the former railroad line of the Sanford & Indian River Railroad, running between Sanford and Oviedo. In the early 1900s, a spur was added to the line, running north and east in order to allow farmers of Black Hammock a way to ship their produce to Sanford and Winter Park. The spur was later abandoned due to the advent of automobiles and the decline of the agricultural industry in Black Hammock. The tracks remained until they were purchased by the State of Florida for the Cross Seminole Trail.

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, depicting farmworkers grinding sugarcane at the Wheeler family farm. The Wheelers lived at 340 South Lake Jessup Avenue in Oviedo, Florida. The family patriarch, Benjamin Franklin Wheeler, Sr. (1878-1954), was born in Dade City on January 2, 1878. After his father passed away in 1889, his family relocated to his mother's hometown in Oviedo. At age 16, Wheeler began working as a telegraph operator for the Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) Railroad. In 1898, he purchased a seedling citrus grove that had been abandoned during the Freeze of 1894-1985. Wheeler soon became a successful citrus grower and celery cultivator.<br /><br />Wheeler married George Lee Wheeler in 1908 and the couple later had three children: Clara Lee Wheeler Evans (1917-2010); Benjamin Franklin Wheeler, Jr. (1920-2006); and Miriam Louise Wheeler (b. 1922). In 1908, Wheeler partnered with C .F. Brannon and Steen Nelson to operate the Nelson Brothers packinghouse. In 1923, Wheeler purchased the company and renamed it Nelson & Company, Inc. Wheeler also served on the Seminole County Commission and the Oviedo City Council. He was also seminal in organizing the Seminole County Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Citrus Mutual, and the Citizens Bank of Oviedo.

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, of Mary Alice Powell Aulin (1904-1993) with three of her great grandchildren: Reagan Nicole Wilder (1978-), Brandie Lee Wilder (1980-), and Robert Brady Wilder (1982-). Alice Aulin was born in Sanford, Florida, to parents Charles Powell and Mary Maude Rabun Powell. Aulin arrived in Oviedo in 1921 to work as a switchboard operator and a seamstress. She married Andrew Aulin, Jr. (1893-1964), the son of Oviedo's first postmaster, Andrew Aulin, Sr. (1843-1918). Together, the couple had five children: Mary Lenora Aulin (b. 1924), Alice Kathryn Aulin (b. 1926), Charles Warren Aulin (1927-1964), Bettye Jean Aulin, and Andrew Aulin, Jr. (b. 1936). The Wilder children were born of Aulin's granddaughter, Debbie Lynn Reagan (1958-) and Robert Downey Wilder (1953-).

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of the road to Clifton Springs, a spring in Oviedo, Florida. Clifton Springs was named in honor of the hometown of Dr. Henry Foster, a wealthy grower from Lake Charm in Oviedo. Originally called White's Wharf, the site marks the approximate location where John Bartram and William Bartram camped during their excursion along the St. Johns River in 1765-1766. William G. White migrated to the area in the late 1870s and built a store here in 1879. White moved his store to Orlando in the 1880s. Many Oviedo residents used the site as the location for their annual May picnics, which began in 1880. The picnics were hosted by a joint committee of the local Baptist and Methodist churches. The wharf is now known as Hiley's Fish Camp. The road featured in this photograph is now Florida State Road (SR) 419.

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of Andrew Aulin, Sr. (1843-1918), the Swedish immigrant credited with naming the town of Oviedo, Florida. Aulin immigrated to Oviedo in 1870 and, in 1879, he was appointed the postmaster of the area formerly called the Lake Jesup Settlement,. Aulin also founded the local Ionic Lodge, which was the predecessor to the Masonic Lodge. Aulin was married to Emma Leonora Lawton Aulin (1853-1907) and had five children: Theodore Aulin, Willie Aulin, Mattie Aulin, Mary Aulin, and Andrew Aulin, Jr.

Mikler was born on July 8, 1916, and was raised in Slavia, an unincorporated community that was once part of Oviedo. He taught at Oviedo High School (OHS), where he was seminal in shaping the school's baseball program, from 1946 to 1970. Mikler passed away on April 12, 2000.

Mead Woods was named after Dr. Theodore Luqueer Mead (1852-1936), who was famous for hybridizing orchids, amaryllis, and caladiums. Dr. T. L. Mead migrated from New York to Eustis, Florida, in 1869, and then to Oviedo in 1886. At his 85-acre estate in the Lake Charm area, Dr. Mead conducted experiments and accumulated one of the world's largest butterfly collections.

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of the first bridge built across the Wekiva River. The Wekiva River, sometimes spelled Wekiwa, in a river originating in Apopka and joining the St. Johns River. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) has designated Wekiva as a Florida State Canoe Trail, an Outstanding Florida Water body, and an Aquatic Preserve. The wood used to build the bridge in the photograph was milled in Markham, a community west of Sanford and north of Heathrow, Florida.

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of men, possibly students, playing baseball in front of the Oviedo School, located at 601 King Street in Oviedo, Florida, in the 1940s. The school was first established in 1922 as a K-12 school. In 1948, the secondary grades separated from the elementary school. The upper grade levels formed Oviedo High School and moved to the campus at 601 King Street. Oviedo High School is notable for The Lion's Tale, the award-winning school newspaper recognized by various national and state scholastic press associations; its high ratings from the Governor's A+ Plan for Education; and its successful athletics programs.

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of the Dakin family in Georgetown, Florida. The family consisted of George W. B. Dakin and Anna Marie Olcott Dakin, along with their children: Florence Dakin, Leonard Dakin, Paul Dakin, and Jesse Messmore Dakin. The Dakins owned Racimo Plantation, an orange grove along the St. Johns River, in 1887. Within the next decade, Leonard Dakin developed the Racimo Plantation with 5,000 orange trees, 40 laborers, and a packinghouse. The grove was destroyed by a freeze in 1895.

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of the Lawton General Store Oviedo, Florida sometime between 1900 and 1939. The store was run by two brothers: Thomas Willington Lawton (1882-1963) and Winborn Joseph Lawton, Sr. (1881-1971).<br /><br />T. W. Lawton graduated from Rollins College in 1903. He later received his master's degree from Andover Newton College in Boston, Massachusetts. Following college, Lawton returned to Oviedo, where he married Charlotte "Lottie" Lee (1887-1984) and served as the principal of the Oviedo School from 1905 to 1907. In 1916, he became the first elected Superintendent of Schools of Seminole County. He held that post until 1952 and passed away 11 years later in 1963. Lawton Elementary School is named in his honor.<br /><br />W. J. Lawton, Sr. served as a trustee of the First Baptist Church of Oviedo, as well as a secretary and treasurer for the church's Sunday school. He graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, in 1900. Lawton married Lillian Della Lee (ca. 1883-1977) and had four children: Elizabeth Lawton Laney, Kathryn Lawton, John. K. Lawton, and Winborn Joseph Lawton, Jr. Lawton was in the mercantile business, worked as an insurance agent, and grew citrus.

Wolcott Home by Bettye Reagan

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of the Whitney-Wolcott House, located at 6297 Lake Charm Circle, near Lake Charm in Oviedo, Florida. After buying property from Dr. Henry Foster in 1886, Calvin Whitney built his Victorian Revival-style, two-story winter home near Lake Charm. Whitney, who was the president of the A.B. Chase Piano Company, partnered with Dr. Foster in 1889-1890 to form the Lake Charm Improvement Company, which built a bulkhead, drained from the lake, and removed muck from the bottom. Whitney and Dr. Foster hired a Philadelphia-based mason to construct a sidewalk around the lake. The home was later owned by O. Gus Wolcott. Another well-known inhabitant of the house was Wyatt Wyatt, author of <em>Catching Fire</em> and <em>Deep in the Heart</em>, in the 1990s.

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of farm workers loading celery onto a truck in Slavia, Florida. Slavia was established in 1911 when the Slavia Colony Company purchased about 1,200 acres of land west of Oviedo. The earliest settlers of the community came from rural areas in Central Europe who were attracted to Florida's warm climate and rich soil. By the mid-1920s, celery became Slavia's leading cash crop.

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of Michael Dinda, Sr. (1863-1935) and his twin sons, Michael Jacob Dinda, Jr. (1895-1978) and John Paul Dinda (1895-1968) hauling logs in Slavia, Florida, around 1915. Dinda was one of the founders of both Slavia and of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. Dinda moved his family to the area in 1913. During this time, John Dinda was visiting from college. He also began teaching at the Holy Trinity Slovak Lutheran Church in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1915.

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of Joe Lee, an African-American laborer, with Blue Goose celery at Charles Simeon Lee, Sr.'s farm in Oviedo, Florida, in 1928. The two Lees were of no relation. C. S. Lee (1892-1991) was born on October 27, 1892, and married Goldie Eva Beckley Lee (1892-1976) on April 21, 1915. During the Great Depression, Lee grew celery and bought 20,000 acres to start a cattle ranch. He passed away on November 9, 1991.

A painting created by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, in 1996. The painting was inspired by photograph of a Sunday school picnic at Clifton Springs located near Lake Jesup in Oviedo, Florida, on November 12, 1910. Some of the individuals appearing in the painting are J. C. Brainan, J. H. Lee, Olauc Howard-Huret, Frank Anderson, Sid Brown and his wife, H. B. McCall, and Hugh White.<br /><br />Clifton Springs was named in honor of the hometown of Dr. Henry Foster, a wealthy grower from Lake Charm in Oviedo. Originally called White's Wharf, the site marks the approximate location where John Bartram and William Bartram camped during their excursion along the St. Johns River in 1765-1766. William G. White migrated to the area in the late 1870s and built a store here in 1879. White moved his store to Orlando in the 1880s. Many Oviedo residents used the site as the location for their annual May picnics, which began in 1880. The picnics were hosted by a joint committee of the local Baptist and Methodist churches. The wharf is now known as Hiley's Fish Camp.

A painting by Bettye Reagan, a local artist in Central Florida, inspired by a photograph of the Nelson and Company Packing Plant in 1913. The business was originally founded by Steen Nelson and Gus Nelson and called Nelson Brothers. The company changed its name to Nelson and Company after it became a three-way partnership between the brothers and Benjamin Franklin Wheeler. In 1923, Wheeler became sole owner after buying out the company. The Wheeler Fertilizer Plant was a holding of Nelson and Company. The original plant was destroyed in a fire in 1947, but eventually rebuilt six months later. Nelson and Company is located in what is now the Nelson and Company Historic District, and was incorporated in September of 2001. The 80-acre district encompasses four of Nelson and Company's historic buildings. This photograph shows the Nelson and Co. packing plant in 1913.
