Description
The new Downtown Orlando Post Office building, located at 51 East Jefferson Street, in 1958. The original post office was housed in the Federal Building, located 44 East Central Boulevard in Downtown Orlando, Florida, from 1917 to 1941. In 1935, when James Beggs, Jr. became the postmaster, he began petitioning to move the post office from its Central Boulevard and Court Avenue location to a more spacious building. In 1939, St. James Catholic Church sold a plot of land on Jefferson Street for the new building. The building was designed by Louis A. Simon in the Northern Italian Palazzo Revival-style, and was constructed by J. P. Cullen and Sons. The new building opened in 1941 and housed the post office, the courthouse, and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offices. The building was named an Orlando Historic Landmark in 1989. However, it was eventually sold back to the St. James Church. In 2003, the building was renovated and came under joint ownership by both the church and the federal government. Today, the building retains its post office services but also includes offices for the Catholic Diocese.

Tampa (Fla.)
Description
Collection of digital images, documents, and other records depicting the history of Tampa, Florida. Series descriptions are based on special topics, the majority of which students focused their metadata entries around.
Before European settlement, the present-day Tampa area was inhibited by the Tocobaga and Pohoy tribes, which were decimated by European diseases and warfare. In 1824, the U.S. Army established the area's first permanent settlement called Fort Brooke, located at the mouth of the Hillsborough River.
Siding with the Confederacy during the American Civil War, Tampa served as the site of the Battle of Tampa, an inconclusive battle from June 30 to July 1, 1862; the Battle of Fort Brooke on October 16, 1862; and the Battle of Ballast Point on October 18, 1863. Incorporated as a town in 1949, Tampa experienced immense growth in the 1880s with the arrival of the railroad, the discovery of phosphate, and the development of the cigar industry.
From the 1920s to the 1950s, Tampa became a major center for organized crime, Prohibition-era bootlegging, and illegal bolita, a Cuban-influenced lottery. Tampa grew considerably during World War II, as the city was chosen for the location of MacDill Field, now the MacDill Air Forced Base (AFB). The founding of Busch Gardens Tampa and the University of South Florida also spurred growth.

Description
A letter from Jim Macbeth, the Chief of the Florida Bureau of Historical Museums, to A. B. Cleveland, Tampa District Manager for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). In the letter, Macbeth requests any obsolete artifacts relating to USPS. In particular, he is interested in post office boxes and rubber stamps.

The bureau was established in 1967 when the Florida Legislature established the Florida Board of Archives and History to replace the Florida Board of Antiquities. The board included three additional bureaus: the Bureau of Archives and Records Management, the Bureau of Historic Sites and Properties, and the Bureau of Publications. In 1969, the Florida Division of Archives, History and Records Management was created to replace the board. The division was later renamed the Florida Division of Historical Resources in 1986.
