Homesteading
Description
The homestead documentation for Benjamin James. James' homestead was located in the southwestern portion of present-day Oviedo. James was born Savannah, Georgia, and migrated to Hastings, Florida, where he met his wife, Esther James. The couple married on January 24, 1913, at what then was called The Woods, on the eastern side of the town of Gabriella, near Bear Gully Lake. The couple had nine children, in addition to the four children from Esther's previous marriage.

On July 8, 1921, James filed a homestead for 160 acres for his growing family at The Woods. Following a hurricane devastated Miami on September 11, 1926, the James family opened their property to Floridians left homeless in the aftermath. These refugees became the first settlers of the Jamestown and included Bob and Flossie Wells, George and Nettie Davis, and Morris J. "Preacher" and Margaret Williams, the Nails, the Olivers, the Perrys, the Bryants, the Evans, the Brannons, the Walkers, and the Ryans. James is the only African American to have a Central Florida town named after him.

Museums--Florida
Description
Collection of digital images, documents, and other records contributed by the Maitland Historical Museum. The museum is located at 221 West Packwood Avenue in Maitland, Florida.
Present-day Maitland was originally inhabited by the Seminole tribe, which called the area "Fumecheliga," meaning "Musk Mellon Place." In 1838, Fort Maitland was established on the west coast of Lake Maitland by the U.S. Army and named after Captain William Seton Maitland, a casualty of the Seminole Wars.
Settlement in Maitland expanded at the close of the American Civil War and the citrus industry grew. Around 1876, Dr. Haskell formed a syndicate and began contruscting a railroad from Jacksonville to Maitland that was completed in 1880. In 1885, the area was incorprated as the Town of Lake Maitland. Many left Maitland following the Freeze of 1894-1895. Despite the freeze's devastation, the citrus industry was able to grow and expand, reaching its peak in 1926.
More growth occurred in the 1950s and 1960s with the development of the space industry in nearby Orlando and Brevard County. In 1959, the city was renamed Maitland. Growth continued in the 1970s with the arrival of Walt Disney World in the Orlando area.

Wholesale trade--Florida
Description
A letter from George B. Agnew to Isaac Vanderpool, dated May 21, 1895. On behalf of the National Produce Company as its secretary and treasurer, Agnew offers a business deal with Vanderpool in regards to the purchase of Florida fruits and vegetables for the wholesale market. The National Produce Co. was a produce wholesaler based at 635 Liberty Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Vanderpools were one of the original families in Maitland, Florida, with Isaac Vanderpool, the patriarch of the family, buying 160 acres of land in the year 1870. In 1876, after facing a large financial loss and disaster in New York, Isaac and his wife, Harriet Vanderpool, permanently moved to the Maitland area. At the time of their arrival, the area only had about four or five family homesteads and orange groves. Vanderpool was part of the first committee to help incorporate the town of Lake Maitland. The committee included Vanderpool, Henry S. Kedney, George Packwood, and Richard Packwood.

The Vanderpool family was also heavily involved in civic affairs, which included the establishment of the town of Eatonville by Vanderpool and Josiah C. Eaton. The Vanderpools were paricipants in the creation of the Florida Audubon Society and the organization of the Maitland Public Library. Harriet Vanderpool, along with Bishop Henry C. Whipple, founded the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, and, in 1927, she wrote the "Maitland Song," which the chamber of commerce adopted as the official song for the city. In 1887, Vanderpool became Mayor of Maitland and during this time, acquired land for the city first cemetery. In 1892, he built the first packinghouse in Maitland, which was featured in TheGate City Chronicle as the state most modern and best packinghouse.

Description
Collection of digital images, documents, and other records depicting the history of Seminole County, Florida. Series descriptions are based on special topics, the majority of which students focused their metadata entries around.
Mosquito County, a massive county south of St. Johns County that consisted of much of Central Florida was established in 1824. In 1845, Mosquito County was renamed Orange County when Florida earned statehood. This new county included present-day Osceola County, Seminole County, Lake County, and Volusia County. Orange County was named so for the area's major fruit crop: oranges. The area was devastated by a freeze during the winter of 1895-1896, which allowed for subsequent land speculators to initiate a land boom in Florida, with Orlando becoming a "boom town."
Seminole County separated from Orange on April 25, 1913, and was named for the Seminole tribes that originally inhabited the area. In the early-1900s, Seminole County was known for its agricultural development and close proximity to shipping lanes. By the 1920s, citizens in Seminole County, particularly in Sanford, soon shifted their interests in making the area a tourist destination.

Description
A table representing crop acreage, production and value for Seminole County, Florida, in 1944. Statistics in the table identify various products produced in the county, how many acres each crop occupied, production number of each crop, the number of farms reporting for each crop, and the value of each crop. The U.S. Census of Agriculture produced statistics for corn, sorghum (used for all purposes except for syrup), oats cut for feeding (small grains), cowpeas (except for green manure), peanuts, peanuts vines used for hay, tame hay (excluding sorghum), Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams, sugarcane harvested for syrup, chufas harvested for nuts, and chufas used for hogging off.
In the early-1900s, Seminole County was known for its agricultural development and close proximity to shipping lanes. By the 1920s, citizens in Seminole County, particularly in Sanford, soon shifted their interests in making the area a tourist destination.

Description
Collection of digital images, documents, and other records depicting the history of Orange County, Florida.
The area was devastated by a freeze during the winter of 1895-1896, which allowed for subsequent land speculators to initiate a land boom in Florida, with Orlando becoming a "boom town." Seminole County separated from Orange on April 25, 1913 and was named for the Seminole tribes that originally inhabited the area.
In 1926, Orange County was hit by a hurricane and then by the stock market crash and Great Depression beginning in 1929. Central Florida recovered in the late 1930s and experienced steady growth until 1967. In 1971, Walt Disney World was completed, signaling the beginning of the transformation of the Greater Orlando area into one of the world's major tourist destinations. The citrus industry in the county peaked in the early 1970s, but many groves were destroyed by several freezes during the early 1980s.

Fruit industry--Florida
Description
A table representing the acreage of principle crops in Seminole County, Florida, during 1924. Crops such as corn, velvet beans, and dry edible beans were listed as grain and forage crops. Tame grasses and annual legumes were categorized as hay crops. Crops such as cotton, sugar cane, potatoes, and strawberries were listed as miscellaneous. Vegetables grown for sale included cabbages, melons, lettuce, onions, corn, and tomatoes. All of the fruits and nuts were listed under orchard fruits and nuts.
In the early-1900s, Seminole County was known for its agricultural development and close proximity to shipping lanes. By the 1920s, citizens in Seminole County, particularly in Sanford, soon shifted their interests in making the area a tourist destination. This trend is made apparent in the total value of principle crops listed by the U.S. Census of Agriculture in 1924. In 1919, principle crops were valued at $186,229 in comparison to drop in value in 1924 to $22,509 for the same identified crops.

Title
Acreage and Production of Hay Crops and Miscellaneous Crops Harvested, Seminole County, 1939
Alternative Title
Seminole County Hay and Miscellaneous Crops
Subject
Seminole County (Fla.)
Agriculture--Florida
Description
A table representing acreage and production of hay and miscellaneous crops harvested in Seminole County during 1939. Statistics in the table identify various products produced in the county, how many acres each crop occupied, production number of each crop, and the number of farms reporting for each crop. The U.S. Census of Agriculture identified hay and sorghum (for all purposes except for syrup) as hay crops. The census also identified Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams, cotton, tobacco, sugarcane (used for syrup), and root and grain crops (used for hogging or grazing) as miscellaneous crops.
In the early-1900s, Seminole County was known for its agricultural development and close proximity to shipping lanes. By the 1920s, citizens in Seminole County, particularly in Sanford, soon shifted their interests in making the area a tourist destination.
