International Power Generation magazine in the United Kingdom in time for distribution at the 1981 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Gas Turbine Conference and Expo in London. The W501D introduced at that time was later called the W501D5 and, after initial sales and field testing, was offered at a rating of approximately 105MW.

The article describes the many new design features that represented significant upgrades and improvements over the previous version of the W501D. It also describes the various applications of the gas turbine including simple cycle "EconoPac," combined cycle and operation with alternative fuels such as gasified coal. The W501D5 was the largest and most efficient heavy duty 60Hz (3600RPM) gas turbine in the world at the time.]]>
