Description
Headstone of John Bonnell Ivey (1834-1923) at Lake Hill Cemetery, located at 5950 Old Winter Garden Road in Orlo Vista in Orlando, Florida, in 2001. Ivey was the son of Robert Ivey and Priscilla Bonnell Ivey. He married Elizabeth Matilda Ann Roberson Ivey in 1954 and had six children with her: Hettie Caroline Ivey, Emma Rossaline Ivey, Lewis Henry Ivey, Robert Edmund Ivey, John Bonnell Ivey, and Joshua Robert Ivey. After his wife passed away in 1872, Ivey remarried Ann Beasely Ivey and had six additional children: Mary Jane Ivey, William Rufus Ivey, Julia Martha Ivey, Ida Viola Ivey, Mathias Lee Ivey, and Cora Gertrude Ivey. Ivey was appointed as the first sheriff and tax collector for Orange County by Provisional Governor William Marvin, shortly after the Civil War. He was later elected Justice of the Peace and Acting Coroner for the county.
The cemetery, just west of Orlando, is the site of the remains of various early settlers of the city, including Aaron and Mary Jernigan. Originally called Patrick Cemetery, the graveyard was originally located between Lake Lorna Doone and Rock Lake, and held the remains of members of the Beasley, Ivey, Patrick, and Roberson families. The four families formed the Lake Hill Cemetery Association in 1884 and moved the previously buried remains to the new Lake Hill Cemetery in Orlo Vista.

Description
Episode 11 of RICHES Podcast Documentaries: Harry T. Moore: An Interview with Dr. Jim Clark. RICHES Podcast Documentaries are short form narrative documentaries that explore Central Florida history and are locally produced. These podcasts can involve the participation or cooperation of local area partners.

Episode 11 focuses on Dr. Jim Clark's contribution to revitalizing the Moores legacy during the 1980s and early 1990s. During his time at The Orlando Sentinel, Dr. Clark began publishing articles on the Moores and their untimely deaths. Those publications resulted in a resurgence of interest in the Moores and local initiatives to preserve their legacy. Harry Tyson Moore was a pioneer of the Civil Rights Movement in Florida and founder of the first Brevard County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He and his wife, Harriette Vyda Simms Moore, were assassinated with a Ku Klux Klan bomb on December 25, 1951. The Moores are the first NAACP members to be murdered for their activism and Harry T. Moore is sometimes called the first martyr of the 1950s-era civil rights movement.

Description
Episode 48 of RICHES Podcast Documentaries: The Groveland 4. RICHES Podcast Documentaries are short form narrative documentaries that explore Central Florida history and are locally produced. These podcasts can involve the participation or cooperation of local area partners.

Episode 48 features an interview with Gilbert King, author of Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America. King's book analyzes the Groveland Four: Ernest Thomas, Charles Greenlee, Samuel Shepherd, and Walter Lee Irvin. Also known as the Groveland Boys, these four African-American men were falsely accused of raping Norma Padgett in Lake County, Florida, in 1949. Thomas was shot and killed by a mob, but the other three suspects were put on trial. Both Shepherd and Irvin were sentenced to death and Greenlee was sentenced to life in prison. National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) special counsel Thurgood Marshall had the verdict overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in November 1951.

While transporting Shepherd and Irvin, Lake County Sheriff Willis Virgil McCall claimed that the prisoners attacked him and that he subsequently shot and killed Shepherd and shot Irvin. Irvin claimed that McCall falsified the escape attempt, but McCall was cleared of any wrongdoing. Irvin was again sentenced to death for the rape of Padgett. In 1955, the then newly-elected Governor of Florida LeRoy Collins commuted Irvin's sentence to life in prison. Irvin was paroled in 1968 and died in 1970.
Abstract
In this episode, we sat down with Gilbert King to interview him about his recent book Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America. His book about the Groveland 4 is some important local history.

Description
Chase & Company was established by brothers Sydney Octavius Chase and Joshua Coffin Chase in 1884. The company sold insurance and later invested in storage facilities and fertilizer sales. Chase & Company was known mainly for its agricultural interests and maintained a series of citrus groves throughout Central Florida. The company was based out of Sanford and became one of the city's largest employers into the early twentieth century. By 1886, the Chase brothers purchased several citrus groves to expand their business, including Isleworth Grove in Windermere, Florida. Isleworth Grove covered a total of 1,300 acres along the Butler Chain of Lakes. Between 1894 and 1895, Central Florida was hit by several freezes and most of the citrus crop was destroyed. Chase & Company did not grow citrus crops again until 1904 when Joshua came back from an extended stay in California. Between 1894 and 1900, different types of pesticide equipment was created, including equipment driven by steam, machines, and horses.Randall Chase joined in the family business soon after his brother, Sydney Chase, Jr., did in 1922. Randall became the president of Chase & Company from 1948-1965. The Isleworth property stayed in the Chase family until 1984 when Franklin Chase, the son of Sydney Chase, sold the property to famed golfer Arnold Palmer.

Description
An original letter of correspondence between A. Q. Lancaster and Randall Chase. Topics discussed in the letter include a fight between a white laborer's son and a colored laborer at Isleworth Grove. The white laborer was taken to the hospital and the colored laborer was arrested.

Mr. Randall Chase,
Sanford, Fla.
Dear Sir:
Lawrence Watkins, (white,) James Davis, (colored) both came from Ga. with Mr. Bona. These boys had a fight this morning with shuffle hoes. Watkins cut Davis on the leg slightly, and Davis struck at Watkins' head and he threw up his hands and the hoes struck both his hands and cut him bad. We taken Watkins to the hospital in Orlando and Davis is in jail at Orlando. Will have Davis in court Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Davis ran when he struck Watkins, and as soon as we got Watkins started to the hospital we got our guns and started to capture Davis, and made quite a search before we found him. He passed through Windermere about 10 minutes before we got there and got a machine there and started after him and went to Gotha but saw nothing of him, and the sheriff came out on the rialroad[sic] to find where he left the road, and they found him just the other side of Windermere hid behind a pile of railroad ties, and the other sheriff taken him to Orlando.
Yours very truly ,
A. Q. Lancaster.

Description
Collection of digital images, documents, and other records depicting the history of Geneva, Florida. Series descriptions are based on special topics, the majority of which students focused their metadata entries around.
Geneva is a community in Seminole County. The area was originally inhabited by the Timucuan tribe as early as 2000 B.C.E. Between 1765 and 1766, John and William Bartram explored the St. John's River including the area that would become Geneva, which was inhabited at the time by the Seminole tribe formed in the 1760s. New settlers arrived and settled in Harney Cove during the 1843-1845 period. Harney Cove was renamed Geneva in 1880.
