The Florida Agriculturist issue published on November 9, 1887. The Florida Agriculturist began publication in 1878 with Christopher O. Codrington as its first editor. Codrington, who was from Jamaica, was an importer of exotic plants. The newspaper was published weekly through 1907, but changed to a monthly paper in 1908. The paper changed hands from Codrington to E. O. Painter by 1887. Painter had so much success with the paper that he was able to create a printing company: E. O. Painter Printing Company. The paper was directed towards the farmers and fruit and vegetable growers of Florida. The Florida Agriculturist discussed different places in Florida, especially DeLand and Jacksonville, that were the best to plant, and which fruits and plants were in season. The paper also offered railroad schedules. In the late 1800s, with a large influx of Chinese immigrants, the newspaper recommended these immigrants as farm laborers, for the purpose of replacing African-American laborers. In 1907, Painter sold the newspaper and it relocated to Jacksonville where it would last another four years eventually ending publication in 1911. Some of the topics discussed in this issue include an industrial cooperation, artificial fertilizers, the Florida Shippers Union, Roger LaRoque, the Haymarket Affair, packing for the poultry industry, the fate of anarchists for the Haymarket Affair, the role of women in the home, malaria and various other medical ailments, the use of cottonseed as fertilizer, broadcast harrowing,new city ordinanaces for DeLand, and the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court of Florida.]]>

Sanford entered the world of pro ball in 1919 with the formation of the Class D Florida State League. In its inaugural season, the Celeryfeds won the first half pennant, finishing in a tie with Orlando for the best overall record. Although the league folded in 1928, it was revived in 1936, and once again included a team from Sanford called the Lookouts, which was part of the Senators family of clubs. This struggling team finally turned around when they acquired former Major League star, Dale Alexander, as manager and first baseman in 1939. In over 80 years of Florida State League history, no team has ever matched their .737 winning percentage that season. The next season, the Sanford Seminoles emerged as the city's baseball team.]]>

Campbell used these postcards as aids in her classrooms to teach advanced subjects, such as Shakespearean drama. A notable student pictured is Jerry Bumgarner (1935-1983). Born on November 8, 1935, in St. Charles, Illinois, Bumgarner was an active member of the high school C Club, track, and football teams. On June 25, 1954, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at nineteen years old. He served in the 7th Engineer Battalion and retired on June 24, 1956, reaching the rank of E2, Private First Class. He married Janice M. Colegrove and the couple lived in St. Charles until they moved to Clearwater, Florida. Bumgarner passed away on March 1, 1983.
In 2017, the University of Central Florida was one of three universities selected to launch the National Cemetery Administration’s Veterans Legacy Program Project. The program engaged a team of scholars to make the life stories of veterans buried in the Florida National Cemetery available to the public. The project engages UCF students in research and writing and fosters collaboration between students, faculty and local Central Florida schools to produce interactive curriculum for k-12 students. The corresponding website exhibit uses RICHES Mosaic Interface to create a digital archive of related data. The public can use the project-developed augmented-reality app at more than 100 gravesites at the Florida National Cemetery, where they can access the UCF student-authored biographies of veterans.]]>

The Generation Gap, Westinghouse Electric Corporation's newsletter, regarding the relocation of the company's Steam Turbine-Generator Division (STGD) from Lester and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Orlando, Florida, starting in 1982. A new headquarters building was being constructed at The Quadrangle, at the corner of Alafaya Trail and University Boulevard. Temporary office space was located in a renovated shopping center on East Colonial Drive. Shown in photographs on the second page are executives uncovering the cornerstone of the new building (dated February of 1982), but the building was not ready to have it installed as yet.
Originally called the Westinghouse Electric Company, George Westinghouse (1846-1914) founded his manufacturing company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on January 8, 1886. In 1889, he renamed his business the The Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company. Westinghouse's primary products include turbines, generators, motors and switchgear related to the generation, transmission, and use of electricity. The company changed its name to Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1945. The company relocated its Steam Turbine Generator Divisions from Pennsylvania (turbines from Lester and generators from Pittsburgh) to Orlando, Florida, beginning in 1981. The Power Generation Business Unit (PGBU) building was located in The Quadrangle, at 4400 Alafaya Trail. Originally, Westinghouse had purchased a large plot of land for future development that extended westward from Alafaya Trail to Rouse Road. The original headquarters was located on several acres of that land parcel close to Alafaya Trail. As the PGBU grew in size, other buildings were rented and then, after PGBU was sold to Siemens Corporation, additional buildings were added to the complex. In 1994, after a major management shuffling and commitment to change from an industrial manufacturing company to primarily a broadcasting/communications company, Westinghouse bought CBS network. It then changed its name to the CBS Corporation.]]>

The Lake Maitland Advertiser, judging from the partial front page and one article in which the paper is referred to as "The Advertiser.". However, there is no existing evidence of a newspaper called The Lake Maitland Advertiser ever being published. In fact, there is no evidence of a local newspaper existing in Maitland other than The Maitland Courier in the 1800s. However, from the partial front page, it is evident that the name of the paper does begin with "Lake Maitland," and from the articles and advertisements it is clearly a Maitland newspaper. Some topics discussed in this issue include baby smokers, street searches, winter-blooming roses, speaking dolls, Jennings' Business College, news and notes for women, fruit culture in South Florida, Japanese dining sets, Roman togas, and the spoiling of watches.]]>

Red Patriots: The Story of the Seminoles and a friend of Dr. Hawks. Dr. Hawks was born in Bradford, New Hampshire, on November 26, 1826. After teaching in New Hampshire, New York, and Georgia, Dr. Hawks eventually graduated from a medical college in Vermont. During the Civil War, Dr. Hawks and his wife, Dr. Esther Jane Hill Hawks (1833-1906), became involved in the abolition movement via the Freedman's Aid Society. Dr. Hawks was assigned to Hilton Head, South Carolina, where they assisted in forming an African-American regiment and served as its surgeon.
Following the war, Dr. Hawks, along with several Army officers, organized the Florida Land and Lumber Company and purchased land in Port Orange, Florida, north of Spruce Creek, for the purpose of establishing a freedmen's colony. Dr. Hawks remained and served as the town's first postmaster. Many of the South Carolinians who migrated here eventually left due to the area's poor soil. The company also attempted to establish a steam sawmill in Port Orange, but the project was ultimately abandoned. In 1865, Dr. Hawks also bought a Spanish land grant for property two miles south of New Smyrna, which the would later retire to and name Hawks Park. From 1866 to 1867, Dr. Hawks served as the Collector of Customs at Pensacola. In 1871, Governor Harrison Reed appointed Dr. Hawks the Superintendent of Schools for Volusia County. During that same year, Dr. Hawks compiled and published the Florida Gazetteer.Dr. Hawks died on April 2, 1910.]]>

In 1962, land on East Colonial Drive was bought to open a freestanding Sears store and a year later construction started. In 1973, the Sears on Colonial was incorporated with the Fashion Square Mall and it remains open today. On May 4, 1974, due to the expanding city and regional malls, the downtown Sears store closed its doors. Ten years later, the building was renovated and became what it is today, a bronze-colored glass tower nicknamed the Copper Whopper.]]>

The best-known of the Lawton family was Thomas Willingham Lawton (1882-1963). T. W. Lawton graduated from Rollins College in 1903. He later received his master's degree from Andover Newton College in Boston, Massachusetts. Following college, Lawton returned to Oviedo, where he married Charlotte "Lottie" Lee (1887-1984) and served as the principal of the Oviedo School from 1905 to 1907. In 1916, he became the first elected Superintendent of Schools of Seminole County. He held that post until 1952 and passed away 11 years later in 1963. Lawton Elementary School is named in his honor.]]>

The newspaper was published every Thursday and it's estimated circulation between 1886 and 1887 was 559 to an area of residents with an estimated population of 1,300 by 1887. This edition features articles on topics such as medical and agricultural advice, jokes, the opening of the Seminole Hotel, British Revolutionary War officer Major John André (174-1780), sectional amiability between the North and South following the end of the war, settlers in Florida, the development taking place in Altamonte, an open letter to taxpayers, local events to celebrate the holidays, the staff’s contention with a loud rooster, the comings and goings of Maitland’s residents, decisions made at the last town meeting and the members of the board, scientific experiments conducted in the interest of industrial innovation, weather, temperance, and religious readings.]]>

Originally named after the Sanford Mayor and president of Seminole County Bank, construction of the Forrest Lake Hotel began in 1916. Local architect Elton J. Moughton designed the hotel. In 1925, Hotel Forrest Lake opened and became a popular destination for tourists visiting Sanford. By 1929, the hotel closed after the stock market crash and the downfall of Florida's tourism and real estate boom. William E. Kirchhoff leased the building in 1934 and the hotel reopened in 1935 with the new name Mayfair Hotel. Under Kirchhoff's ownership, the Mayfair Hotel became known as one of the finest hotels in the South. Kirchhoff sold the hotel in 1948 to Horace Stoneham, owner of the New York Giants. Stoneham then sold the building to the Bernard McFadden Foundation. After the Naval Air Station Sanford acquired $1.3 million to fund the construction of a naval academy in 1963, the Foundation made significant alterations to the building to house students from the Sanford Naval Academy. The Foundation later sold the building to the New Tribes Mission in 1977. The New Tribes Mission's goal is to reach tribes who have no access to the Gospel through translated publications and missionary work.]]>

The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green comic. The comic strip centered around Ethan Green, a gay man trying to balance work with love. The comic was first published in 1989 and ran for 15 years before it was retired. The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green was also adapted into film in 2005. This article, as well as the cartoon, was published in The Watermark, Central Florida's local LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer/Questioning, and others) publication.
Since 1994, The Watermark has been the cornerstone source of LGBTQ+ centered news for the Central Florida region. Founded by Tom Dyer in Orlando, the publication began generating bi-weekly issues beginning August 31, 1994. Since then, The Watermark has consistently published newspaper-style issues every other Thursday. Gaining traction, the publication expanded in 1995 to include Tampa and, in 1997, The Watermark became a permanent piece of LGBTQ+ culture when the publication initiated the first large-scale Gay Days Weekend event, the Beach Ball at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon. Before 1999, the publication printed 20,000 copies every week, distributing them to over 500 locations between its two major cities. The comic was first published in 1989 and ran for 15 years before it was retired. The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green was also adapted into film in 2005.
Since 1994, The Watermark has been the cornerstone source of LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer/Questioning, and others) centered news for the Central Florida region. Founded by Tom Dyer in Orlando, the publication began generating bi-weekly issues beginning September 14, 1994. Since then, The Watermark has consistently published newspaper-style issues every other Thursday. Gaining traction, the publication expanded in 1995 to include Tampa and, in 1997, The Watermark became a permanent piece of LGBTQ+ culture when the publication initiated the first large-scale Gay Days Weekend event, the Beach Ball at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon. Before 1999, the publication printed 20,000 copies every week, distributing them to over 500 locations between its two major cities. Following 1999, the publication launched watermarkonline.com shifting to an online publication style. In 2016, Rick Claggett purchased The Watermark.]]>

The tower and the carillon housed inside is Bok Tower Gardens' most distinctive feature. The carillon consists of sixty bells, ranging in size from 16 pounds to just under 12 tons. The bells are played like an organ with the keys connected to the clappers of each bell. Bok Tower has had only three regular carillonneurs in its more than 70 years. The sanctuary's first carillonneur was Anton Brees, serving as the only carillonneur from 1928 until 1967. Milford Myhre has been the resident carillonneur since 1968. William De Turk has been the assistant carillonneur since 1993. De Turk is also the librarian of the Anton Brees Carillon Library, which is reportedly the largest and most comprehensive carillon library in the world.]]>

The Sanford Herald on the planned construction of the Sanford State Farmers' Market in 1934. The Sanford State Farmers' Market, located at 1300 South French Avenue, was founded in 1934 in order to provide a central location in which farmers would sell their produce directly to consumers. The idea for the Sanford State Farmers' Market was devised by Fred Dorner and Gus Schmach, both members of the Seminole Agricultural Club. Sanford Chamber of Commerce president Harry M. Papworth also contributed to the development of the market. The Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) authorized construction plans on June 11, 1934. On June 20, 1934, the City of Sanford donated a portion of the Alex V. French properties to the State Marketing Board, which selected the northwest corner of French Avenue and Thirteenth Street. The board approved the installation of telegraph and telephone equipment, as well as a three-pump filling station. The Sanford State Farmer's Market opened on December 18, 1934. By 1939, the Farmers' Market was bringing a total volume of business of $627,065.81. In 1941, business volume reached over $700,000. On April 4, 1957, a fire destroyed the building and caused damages estimated at $2.5 million. Reconstruction began almost immediately and the Farmers' Market was expected to re-open by the fall of 1957. In 1991, plans were created to restore, preserve, and convert the citrus packing house into a museum.]]>

Debunking the So-Called Spanish Mission Near New Smyrna Beach, Volusia County, Florida in 1941. Instead, Capt. Coe revealed evidence that the site was actually a sugar mill, which is now known as the New Smyrna Sugar Mill Ruins, which was destroyed by Native Americans in 1845, just five years after it was erected. The ruins were added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Also known as the Cruger and DePeyster Sugar Mill, the ruins are located at 600 Old Mission Road in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

The site also served the Tavares, Orlando and Atlantic Railroad, and the Orlando and Winter Park Railway. In 1926, the Orlando Health/Amtrak station took over passenger operations, but Church Street Station continued to serve as a ticket outlet and freight station until 1972.
In 1973, a Dixieland-theme entertainment complex was established between the railroad tracks and Garland Avenue in seven vacant buildings for $22 million. The depot itself houses retail shops. The depot was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and named an Orlando Historic Landmark in 1978. In 1988, the complex was expanded to include the Church Street Exchange and the Church Street Market. The development was led by Bob Snow and Steve Fuller and sold in 1989 for $61 million. The complex peaked in the 1980s, drawing approximately 1.7 million visitors a year. Due to failure to compete with major theme parks, visitor attendance dwindled and the complex was sold in 2001, only to close shortly after.
The Orange Blossom Special, remained at the station until January of 2012. The 100-year-old engine was transported to the Florida Railroad Museum in Parrish in order to make room for the new SunRail platform. Church Street Station is on the National Register of Historic Places.]]>

The Orange County Citizen issue published on July 25, 1911. This edition features articles on Maitland, Florida. Such topics include the various groves in Maitland, the various churches, the Maitland Library, a proposed traction line to be built by the Florida Citrus Railway Company,the residences of several residents, Chadbourne Hall, convict leasing, the cotton industry, the Winter Park Fruit Company, the Orlando Irrigated Farms Company, and the town of Oakland.
The Orange County Citizen was originally published as a weekly newspaper by Dr. Geiger (first name unknown) of Apopka, Florida. The paper was known for having a morally sound tone due to its publisher's profession as a Baptist preacher. However, after taking the position of a missionary, Dr. Geiger gave the paper up to A. B. Newton, who represented Winter Garden in the Florida Legislature. Newton kept up the moral tone of The Orange County Citizen, but soon found that he was unable to continue publishing the paper due to his other obligations. Newton then sold the paper to C. E. Howard, who was also the editor of The Orlando Reporter-Star. Under Howard, The Orange County Citizen continued it's moral tendencies and greatly supported Prohibition. Howard continued to run the newspaper weekly for seven years, until he eventually sold it to Arthur Ivey, a reporter for The Reporter-Sentinel. Ivey discontinued publication shortly thereafter.]]>

White's Wharf marks the approximate location where John Bartram and William Bartram camped during their excursion along the St. Johns River in 1765-1766. William g. White migrated to the area in the late 1870s and built a store here in 1879. White moved his store to Orlando in the 1880s. The site was also known as Clifton Springs, which is a name in honor of the hometown of Dr. Henry Foster, a wealthy grower from Lake Charm in Oviedo. Many Oviedo residents used the site as the location for their annual May picnics, which began in 1880. The picnics were hosted by a joint committee of the local Baptist and Methodist churches. The wharf is now known as Hiley's Fish Camp.]]>

The Oviedo Woman's Club was founded in 1906 as the Oviedo Magazine Club by seven charter members: H. B. McCall, Edith Meade, Georgia Lee Wheeler, Lillian Lee Lawton, Mattie Aulin Wheeler, Milcah Yonge, and Mary King. The first clubhouse was constructed in 1914 and also served as Oviedo's first library. In 1916, the club joined the Florida Federation of Women's Clubs (FFWC) and officially changed its name to the Oviedo Woman's Club. In 1923, the woman's club was federated under the umbrella of the General Federation of Woman's Clubs (GFWC). A new clubhouse was built in 1961 on property donated by R. L. Croom, a former member, which is located at 414 King Street. Originally called the Westinghouse Electric Company, George Westinghouse (1846-1914) founded his manufacturing company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on January 8, 1886. In 1889, he renamed his business The Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company. Westinghouse's primary products include turbines, generators, motors and switchgear related to the generation, transmission, and use of electricity. The company changed its name to Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1945. In 1981, the company began to relocate its division headquarters for the Steam-Turbine Generator Divisions from Pennsylvania (turbines from Lester and generators from Pittsburgh) to Orlando, Florida. The Power Generation Business Unit (PGBU) building was located in The Quadrangle, at 4400 Alafaya Trail. Originally, Westinghouse had purchased a large plot of land for future development that extended westward from Alafaya Trail to Rouse Road. The original headquarters was located on several acres of that land parcel close to Alafaya Trail.
As the PGBU grew in size, other buildings were rented and then, after PGBU was sold to Siemens Corporation, additional buildings were added to the complex. In 1994, after a major corporate management shuffling and commitment to change from an industrial manufacturing company to primarily a broadcasting/communications company, Westinghouse bought the CBS Network and changed its name to the CBS Corporation. As the PGBU grew in size, other buildings were rented and then, after PGBU was sold to Siemens Corporation in 1998, additional buildings were added to the Quadrangle.]]>

The Power of Passage, a sculpture created by Johann Eyfells in 1987. Eyfells was born in Reykjavík, Iceland, in 1923. Eyfells works with a variety of media, including metal, wood, paper, plastic, and cloth, in an effort to document the interaction between time, space, and gravity. Many of his sculptures are minimal and non-objective, resembling lava or geological formations. In the 1960s, he developed the concept of Receptualism, the practice of portraying original ideas visually using non-representative and abstract forms. Eyfells considers himself more of an experimental chemist than a sculptor.
Eyfells worked as an architect, artist, and teacher in Iceland before relocating to the United States. During his studies at Berkeley, Eyfells met Kristin Halldorsdottir, a former Icelandic model and dress designer. They married in 1949 and moved to Florida together to complete their studies in 1969. Eyfells finished his degree in architecture in 1953, and in 1964, he earned a master’s degree in fine arts. In 1969, he joined the art department of the Florida Technological Institute (present-day University of Central Florida) and taught there for over 30 years. The Rovin' Flames were formed in Tampa in 1965 by Paul Battle (rhythm guitar and vocals), Jimmy "Mouse" Morris (lead guitar), J. R. Maietta (bass) and Jerry Goff (drums). They recorded "Gloria/J.J.J.P." in September 1965 on Fuller Records and recorded their second record, "I Can't/I'm Afraid to Go Home," on Boss records in March of 1966. Hardy Dial, from The Outsiders/Soul Trippers, was added on lead vocals in the summer of 1966, and the group recorded "Bo Diddley/Seven Million People" in June of 1966. Battle, Goff, and Dial left the group in September of 1966 and were replaced by Jim Davis (vocals), Davy Tabak (drums) and John Rogers (organ). Davis left in December of 1966 and Battle briefly returned as lead vocalist, before being replaced by John DeLise, also of The Outsiders/Soul Trippers, in February of 1967. The group replaced Tabak with Eddie Taylor on drums in July of 1967, and recorded "How Many Times/Love Song No. 6" in September of 1967 on Decca Records. Although DeLise lasted longer than most of the band's lead vocalists, he left the group in less than a year, being replaced by Bob Thompson in November of 1967. Rogers passed away in March of 1968, and Thompson and Taylor left the group, being replaced by Jay Colding (organ), Jerry Nickerson (drums) and Ronnie Goedert (lead vocals), in July of 1968. Goedert left shortly thereafter in the fall of 1968, and was replaced by Hobie O'Brien, who remained the lead vocalist until the band broke up in January or February of 1969.]]>

Sanford entered the world of pro ball in 1919 with the formation of the Class D Florida State League. In its inaugural season, the Celeryfeds won the first half pennant, finishing in a tie with Orlando for the best overall record. Although the league folded in 1928, it was revived in 1936, and once again included a team from Sanford called the Lookouts, which was part of the Senators family of clubs. This struggling team finally turned around when they acquired former Major League star, Dale Alexander, as manager and first baseman in 1939. In over 80 years of Florida State League history, no team has ever matched their .737 winning percentage that season. The next season, the Sanford Seminoles emerged as the city's baseball team.]]>

The Tempests were formed in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1963, when the members were just 12 and 13 years old. The original members included Doug Palmer (rhythm guitar), Bobby Allen (drums), Bill Hickman (bass guitar), Tommy Angarano (vocals), and Charlie Bailey (lead guitar). Hickman was later replaced with Buddy Peterson and Palmer was replaced with Mike Hammer, enhancing the group's ability to play songs with harmony. Due to the popularity of The Beatles, harmony-driven bands dominated the radio. The new additions proved a success, as the group won the Battle of the Bands at the Electric Zoo and recorded their first record, "I Want You Only," with "I Want You to Know" as the B-side. Allen was later replaced with Brad Myers on drums, and Bailey with Roy Delese on keyboard. The band opened for many national groups, such as The Dave Clark Five, The Shangri-Las, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, Tommy James and the Shondells, Blues Magoos, The Doors, The McCoys, the Mindbenders, The Allman Brothers Band, and Three Dog Night.]]>

The Outsiders formed in Tampa, Florida, in 1964, consisting of Hardy Dial on vocals, Buddy Richardson and Ronnie Vaskovsky on guitar, Ronnie Elliot on bass guitar, and Spencer Hinkle on drums. They recorded their debut single, "She's Coming On Stronger," for the Tampa record label, Knight, in late 1965. Dial was replaced on vocals by John DeLise and the band recorded its second single, a cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues," in the spring of 1966. The record was a regional success and the band was picked up by the Laurie Records subsidiary Providence, which convinced them to change their name to The Soul Trippers, in order to avoid conflict with several bands that had the same name. In July 1966, they recorded a garage rock version of James Moore's "I'm a King Bee," which sold 20,000 copies. When radio station managers discovered the band was white, they pulled the record from their playlists, and the group departed ways shortly thereafter. Buddy Richardson later formed White Witch and John DeLise went on to play in The Rovin' Flames.]]>
