Description

The present-day area of Bradenton, Florida, was explored by Hernando de Soto (ca. 1500-1542) during his 1539 expedition. Bradenton was founded in 1842, named Bradentown, in honor of Dr. Joseph Braden. Bradentown was officially incorporated as a town in 1903 and then as a the City of Bradenton in 1943, when the Florida legislature merged the City of Manatee with Bradentown.
