Description

Named after Juan Ponce de León (1474-1521), Leon County, Florida was created in 1824, out of parts of Gadsden County. During the mid 19th century, Leon County was known as "cotton kingdom" for its cotton production. By the early 1900s, the cattle and dairy industries became prime aspects of Leon County's economy. The beef industry, in particular, expanded greatly, especially from the 1940s to the 1960s. Leon County's county seat is Tallahassee, which is also the capital of Florida.
