DEWEY HONORED AT LIBRARY MEET HELD IN ORLANDO
________
Author Of Dewey Classification System Chief Speaker
At Dinner Given Friday
Fifty Delegates Present
_________
The Florida Library Association has instituted another important department in its work by holding for the first time in its history a series of district meetings, on lines which have been successfully carried out in other states. Mrs. Anne Van Ness Brown, city librarian and president of the association, appointed Miss Frances E. Gates of Tampa general chairman of these meetings.
The first one was held at the Tampa library last Saturday, with a splendid attendance of both local and out of town people.
At the time a comprehensive program was given on problems relating to library administration according to Mrs. Brown who represented Sanford.
This second in these series of meetings was held Friday at the Albertson Library in Orlando, with Miss Olive Brumbaugh as hostess. The attendance of over 50 guests included librarians from Sanford, Winter Park, DeLand, Maitland, Zellwood, Melbourne and Orange City, also members of the faculty of Rollins College and the trustees and patrons from Orlando. Some of Florida’s most representative club women were present at both of these meetings.

Dr. and Mrs. Melvil Dewey of New York were the guests of honor at the meeting, this being the occasion of Dr. Dewey’s seventy-fifth birthday. Dr. Dewey is the author of the Dewey Decimal Classification, so generally used by the public libraries, and is one of the foremost librarians of the county. He with R. R. Bowker, editor of the Library Journal, were the two speakers on the occasion of the American Library Association held in Philadelphia last October, as they were the only two living represen-tatives of the first meeting of the association 50 years ago.
The Albertson Library enter-tained the visitors yesterday with a four course luncheon at the Yellowstone Tea Rooms, during which Mrs. Brown presented Dr. Dewey a beautiful bouquet of roses from the association with an address of congratulations. Dr. Dewey followed this with a talk on important library developments, after which a very interesting program was given at the library.
Those attending from Sanford were: Mrs. Anne Van Ness Brown, Mrs. Maud E. Clark, Mrs. D. F. Almas and Mrs. A. K. Powers. Similar meetings are soon to be held in Tallahassee, Jacksonville and West Palm Beach, following a plan mapped out, dividing the state into five districts. It is expected that later a meeting will be held in Sanford.
