DAUGHTERS AMERICAN REVOLUTION
ENJOY PICNIC ON SATURDAY
One of the most interesting affairs given in some time was the picnic given Saturday by the D. A. R. Chapter of New Smyrna, in celebration of “Florida Day,” at “Turtle Mound” near Coronado Beach.
March 27 is designated as “Florida Day,” and as it fell this year on Sunday it was decided to observe the day on Saturday. It was on March 27 that Ponce de Leon first sighted Florida and landed at “Mosquito Inlet,” where the waters form a cross. Mrs. Jeanette Thurber Conner of New Smyrna, vice president of the State Historical Society, who has recently returned from Spain where she made a thorough study of Ponce de Leon and Florida, and who holds the original record of Ponce de Leon, gave a wonderful history of Florida, pointing out many interesting facts concerning this part of the state.
Mrs. Conner also gave a splendid history of Turtle Mound, which is situated about twelve miles below Coronado Beach. It is said to be the highest point on the Florida East Coast and has recently been purchased by the Florida State Historical Society to be preserved as a historical spot.
Each guest was presented a copy of the history of this Indian Mound.
The program for the day was in charge of Mrs. B. F. Brown of De Land, first vice state regent of the N. S. D. A. R. Mrs. Brown made a most delightful talk in welcoming the guests. Mrs. Theodore Strawn, also of De Land, past state regent responded and each visiting regent extended greetings from her respective chapter.
At noon a bounteous picnic luncheon augmented by roasted oysters and coffee were served.
Members from chapters at New Smyrna, De Land, Daytona and Sanford enjoyed this delightful day. Among those from Sanford attending were: Mrs. R. E. Tolar, Mrs. John Leonardi, Mrs. A. T. Rossiter, Miss Mary Elizabeth Tolar, Mrs. A. M. De Forrest, Mrs. Clarke, Mrs. Forrest Lake, Mrs. K. S. Dutton.
