Sanford Public Schools

The "Little Red School House" is Sanford's oldest standing building, and was constructed in 1883. The building served as the first school house for Sanford's students, until the construction of Sanford Grammar School in 1902. Carrie Ensminger, daughter of Jefferson Clay Ensminger, and future educator, attended school here in 1893. She is pictured farthest to the right on the third row.

The photograph below was incorporated into the Orange County Bicentennial Committee's "More than a Memory" Collection, which explicitly traces the photo's origins to the Sanford Grammar School at an unspecified date in the 1900s. Three circles of young girls are seen in the photograph holding hands with one another. The bottom portion of the original glass plate negative has suffered from significant flaking emulsion, which have been carried over to all subsequent prints.
