South Apopka Supply Company

Before the City of Winter Garden was incorporated in 1903, this area was often called South Apopka. In this ca.1915 photograph, looking north on Main Street toward Plant, the South Apopka Supply Company can be seen on the left. This building and the structure north of it, known then as the Dillard and Boyd building, once contained boarding houses on their second stories and a variety of businesses on the ground floors. Nestled in the trees at center is the brick Shelby Hotel, constructed by J. L. Dillard in 1913, and now the home of Tony’s Liquors. To the right of the Shelby is the wooden Atlantic Coast Line Railroad depot, built in 1906. Across Plant Street from the depot (on the southeast corner) is the Bank of Winter Garden, opened ca.1909 by J. L. Dillard and, just south of it, is the L.D. Jones store, with the family’s residence upstairs. The South Apopka Supply Company, the Dillard and Boyd building, and the Shelby Hotel are three of the oldest buildings still standing in Winter Garden today.
