Description

Present-day Pinellas County, Florida was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga. The areas was explored by Pánfilo de Narváez (1478-1528) in 1528 and possibly by Hernando de Soto (ca. 1500-1542) in the 1530s. Pinellas County was created in 1912 when it seceeded from Hillsborough County. The area benefited form the Florida Land Boom of the 1920s, but was negatively impacted by Prohibition. In 1926, Pinellas County suffered with the Florida Land Bust and with the Great Depression, which began in 1929. During World War II, Pinellas experience significant growth, despite the collapse of its tourism industry. Various tourist building were converted to military training facilities. Pinellas County continued to grow in the 1950s and 1960s, with Clearwater, its county seat, becoming the fastest growing city in the country.
