Description

List of latitude and longitude coordinates for the portion of the Jacksonville, Tampa, and Key West Railroad running through Central Florida. The railroad opened in 1884 and reached Sanford by 1886. William Van Fleet was the railroad's first president. In 1883, the railroad caught the attention of Henry Plant, a prominent entrepreneur in the state, during a track construction project between Tampa and Kissimmee. He offered the Jacksonville, Tampa, and Key West Railroad all of the funds needed to construct the stretch of railroad. In return, it was agreed that Plant would own all rights to the route. The railroad began in Jacksonville and ran through Palatka and DeLand Junction. The stretch of railroad running through Central Florida ran from downtown Sanford east to the port of Sanford where it then turned north and crossed the St. Johns River.
