Description
The cover of LIFE for its issue published on November 19, 1965. The cover photograph shows Times Square and the Union Carbide Building in Midtown Manhattan of New York City, New York, during the Great Northeast Blackout. The blackout occurred on November 9, 1965, and affected Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, as well as part of Ontario, Canada. Some of the repercussions of the blackout included a large wave of utility purchases of power generating gas turbines to increase the peak load capacity and reserve margin of the many power systems, which were vulnerable to overload and failure. The event is considered to be the catalyst that jump started the modern gas turbine industry.
