IFC for March of Dimes, Fraternities

Photograph taken by Randy Drake on 03/04/1971. The photographer captured the moment of FTU fraternities lining up to register for March of Dimes, also known as “Walk a mile for a child”. This walk-a-thon took place March 6, 1971. A twenty-mile walk that started at the Florida National Bank in downtown Orlando. This walk-a-thon was not limited to FTU fraternity members, but also sororities, student guides, and people from the Orlando community participated. There was an estimate of 150 FTU students who participated.
March of Dimes is a non –profit organization founded by former President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938. The organization was created in response to the nationwide epidemic of polio. The organization throughout the years has changed its primary focus to aid in preventing birth defects and infant mortality through research. Although March of Dimes is funded by grants, they also get support from the community to continue their research. This is possible through their organized events, such as the March of Dimes Walk-a-thon, which is held throughout the nation.
