Description

The area of present-day Duval County, Florida, was originally inhabited primarily by the Timucua, especially the Mocama and the Saturiwa. In 1564, Fort Caroline was established by the French. Coword was settled in 1791 and later renamed Jacksonville. Duval County was created out of parts of St. Johns County in 1822, with Jacksonville as its county seat. The county was named after William Pope Duval (1784-1854), who served as the first Governor of the Territory of Florida from 1822 to 1834.
