Portrait of Dr. John T. Washington
Description
John T. Washington was one of the first African American faculty at the University of Central Florida, serving from the mid-1970’s to the early 1980’s as an Associate Professor of Sociology. After serving in the U.S. Air Force and the Postal Service, he worked his way to the Ph.D level at the University of Florida, and eventually founded the First Church of Peace in Orlando alongside his wife, Alma Louise. As a UCF professor, Dr. Washington helped establish the African American Student Union, and the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action. In the Orlando community, he worked closely with the NAACP, Metropolitan Urban League and the Orlando Housing Community to help combat ongoing legacies of discrimination and segregation. Dr. Washington passed away 1983 from a heart attack while at Disney. His memory has been enshrined in the John T. Washington Center on the UCF campus.
