Title

FTU Peace Rally To Be Subdued

Description

While FTU began its infant stages of development in 1968, America was undergoing a tumultuous period of political dissent, aimed primarily at the Vietnam War. As college campuses through the nation divulged in protests, sit-ins, and demonstrations, UCF was just entering into existence.

In this newspaper article, presumed to be 1968 or 1969, president Millican proclaims that the anticipated national "anti-Vietnam war moratorium" will not suspend classes, and that all protests should be a mater of "personal reflection," rather than as widespread popular demonstration.

Transcript

Classes at Florida Technological University will not be suspended Wednesday as the collegiate anti-Vietnam war moratorium is observed according to an announcement from Dr.Charles N. Millican, president.
Dr. Millican said the moratorium had been discussed at a joint meeting of the student body presidents, the Council of Presidents, the Chancellor, and the staff and members of the Board of Regents and the consensus of the individuals was that the universities should remain open on Oct. 15.
However, Dr. Millican said the opportunity for members of the University community to discuss and express publicly their views and sentiments on the Vietnam war would be offered.
Walt Komanski, president of the FTU student body, said Oct. 15 would be designated as "Peace Wednesday, a day devoted to discussion, contemplation, and debate concerning the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War."
Komanski said the hours of noon to 1 p.m. had been designated as the "Hour of Concern."
He said during this hour an explanation of "Peace Wednesday" would be given with expression of varying points of view and the singing of songs of peace.
Komanski said black arm bands will be worn on the campus during "Peace Wednesday" to show sympathy for the national movement to end the Vietnam War.
"The students, faculty and administration who will participate in 'Peace Wednesday' will do so as a matter of personal reflection rather than public demonstration," the student body president said.
