Description

Postcard of the St. John's River near Sanford. The St. Johns River is the longest river in Florida and is widely used both commercially and recreationally. The St. Johns begins in Indian River County and flows north all the way to Duval County, where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Much of the land along the river remained undeveloped frontier land up until the twentieth century. Many of Florida's rivers, including the St. Johns became overdeveloped and was altered for agricultural and residential centers, which caused severe pollution and other detrimental effects to the natural environment.
