Sears, Roebuck, & Company
Sears, Roebuck & Company came to Orlando in 1931, occupying the first floor of Phillips Apartments. At the time, the City of Orlando was experiencing some economic hardships as a result of the Great Depression. Sears proved to be very successful and was quickly one of the most popular stores in Orlando. In the 1960s, a second Sears open on East Colonial Drive and is now part of Fashion Square Mall. In 1974, the downtown store closed. Today, a large copper-colored building stands on the site of the Sears building.
