Description
A revitalized Main Street after being rebuilt from two devasting fires devastating fires in 1909 and 1912 in Winter Garden, Florida. Taken around 1912, this photograph shows the new Bank of Winter Garden (1908-1929) and, on the right, the Dillard &Â Boyd Building can be easily seen. The Dillard and Boyd Building was constructed in 1912 and is where Arthur B. Newton's dry goods store one stood before the 1909 fire.
In 1908, James Lafayette Dillard (1858-1943) founded the Bank of Winter Garden. He would later become the Director and Vice President of the bank. During the 1912 fire, the bank survived, but later closed in the 1929 crash and the building, enlarged with the addition of a second floor and expanded the west wall, became a department store, and later, a drug store and professional offices. In 1960, the bank was destroyed by a fire.
